Grifball is a team sport between two teams, either red or blue, that consists of four players. The object of the game is to take the bomb in the center of the court and place it on the opposing team's goal, thus ending the round. A point is gained for each placement. The team with the most points at the end of the set number of rounds wins the match.
Grifball is an entirely virtual game played on Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 by way of Microsoft's Xbox Live online service.

[edit] History
Grifball is still a very new sport. It was developed in December of 2007 shortly after Bungie released three new maps to be downloaded for Halo 3. The group that developed and coined grifball was Rooster Teeth Productions, the creators of the widely popular machinima series, Red vs Blue. After clearing out Foundry, one of the three new maps, using Halo 3's forge tool, Rooster Teeth began experimenting with many different things in the empty square room that was left of Foundry.
The sport evolved over a few different iterations until they arrived at where it is now. Rooster Teeth announced what they had created on their website and placed the gametype and "court" up for download so the community could try the game out.
[edit] Origin of the Name
The name "grifball" is derived from Rooster Teeth's Red vs Blue series. During episode 59 in season 4, the Red Army is taking pot shots at Grif and Sarge exclaims "This is the best game since grifball!". The staff always wondered what kind of game that would be, so they created it. In grifball, whoever picks up the bomb turns orange, which is what color Grif has in the series. Then, to Sarge's excitement, since the ball carrier is essentially Grif, he gets killed over and over again. Even if he scores, the bomb explodes, killing him either way. Its a win-win situation for Sarge.
[edit] Playtest Tournament
It didn't take long for interest among the Rooster Teeth community to rise in the sport. A few days after the game's creation, Rooster Teeth conducted a tournament of eight teams, each lead by staff in the office. Each team captain assembled a team of four more players, one to be an alternate, mainly through tryouts from the community. The tournament took place all on one day with Team SG-1 taking the crown.
[edit] American Grifball League of America
After the success of the first tournament, the staff at Rooster Teeth decided to create the American Grifball League of America (AGLA). This new league was headed by Burnie Burns. Registration of teams for the first season took place around new years and The First Annual Rooster Teeth Inc, Winter Grifball League began during the week of January 7th, 2008. Since then, the league has increased in popularity and has added more teams to the league.
[edit] Gameplay and rules
[edit] Court
The standard court for grifball is a cleared out Foundry, part of the Heroic Map Pack for Halo 3, with added walls and objects to make the court square. The most recent map version to be used by the AGLA can be found in the fileshare on the grifball account at Bungie.net.
At the beginning of each round, the two teams begin at opposite sides of the court. After each round, the teams switch sides. A bomb, called the "grifball", starts in the direct center of the court. Behind each team, there is a "goal" on the floor of the court where the opposing team must place the bomb to score a point and end the round.
[edit] Players
Each team plays with four players. Any of them may hold the grifball and score for the team. All players on the court are equipped with a sword and a gravity hammer. The players are allowed to switch between these two weapons as they choose. If a player is killed during the match, they respawn by the goal they are defending within seconds of their death. Any player may be killed by any other player on the court, including their teammates.
[edit] Grifball Carrier
If a player picks up the grifball, the color of their armor will become orange making it easier to see who has the grifball. The grifball carrier also gains extra sheilds, but a direct sword swing or square hammer hit will be enough to kill him or her. The grifball carrier also becomes slightly faster than the rest of the players. If a player holds the grifball, they cannot use either of their weapons. The only defense left to them is the melee option, which will punch and instantly kill a player.
[edit] Scoring
If a player plants the grifball on the opponents goal, the grifball will explode and end the current round. A point will be given to the team who planted the ball. A standard match of grifball is played with five rounds. After these five rounds are over, the team with the most points wins the match.
