Zephyr, Ontario

Zephyr is a small community in Durham Region, in Uxbridge Township Ontario Canada located northwest of the former town of Uxbridge. Zephyr is located north of the Oak Ridges Moraine and is accessed with roads linking to Uxbridge and Udora and linking Mount Albert Road and to Oakwood and Lindsay. Other roads include Ravenshoe Road located about 4 km the north and Lake Ridge Road to the east and Davis Drive further south. The downtown streets include John and Dafoe Streets. The nearest superhighway is Highway 404 to the southwest located about 28 km away. Zephyr is located about 8 km north of Uxbridge, southwest of Udora, southwest of Beaverton, west of Sunderland and east of Newmarket and Mount Albert. The population has not changed. The nearest beaches are on the southern shoreline of Lake Simcoe to the north and all creeks and streams flow northward into Lake Simcoe. The nearest train station is in Uxbridge and Simcoe along the Toronto and Sudbury line. The population growth around Zephyr since the 1960s has been stagnant.

Forests filled with mainly pine trees with a couple of hills lie to the south, the west, the east and the north and dominate most of Zephyr. Farmlands cover the rest of the land. Several minor streams are around Zephyr.

Before 1968, there was a Presbyterian church, once ministered (1910-1926) by Rev. Ewan Macdonald, husband of Lucy Maud Montgomery. It has been preserved as an art gallery and private residence, and the Zephyr Presbyterians have joined with St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Leaskdale.

Zephyr became a railway town in 1877 on the Lake Simcoe Junction Railway, and three years later a station was erected. In the early years, it was primarily a logging town. Zephyr's biggest attraction is its golf course Lockwood Golf Club located on Dafoe Street, It's a nice 9 hole course for beginners.
