Secret (traditional Chinese: 不能說的秘密; simplified Chinese: 不能说的秘密; pinyin: Bùnéng shuō de mìmì), also known by its transliteration The Secret That Cannot Be Told, is a Taiwanese romance film released in 2007. It is the first movie directed by Taiwanese musician Jay Chou.[1]

The story is about a high school student Ye Xiang Lun, who studied in a school for the musically and artistically gifted. Ye’s piano skill was unmistakably a notch above others. On the first day of school, while wandering in the piano rooms, he heard an unknown and alluring melody played by a fellow female student, Lu Xiao Yu.

The film tells a "simple but very beautiful" love story, which Chou has denied that the story was adapted from his personal experiences.[3] When the film debuted, Chou admitted that he drew from childhood experience for the plot, although his personal story was not as romanticized.
Filming for the movie began in January 2007 and was completed in March.[4] Despite previous experience in filming music videos, Chou admits that movies are comparatively more challenging due to storyline and time constraints.[5]

During the initial planning of the movie, Chinese director Zhang Yimou has praised Chou for his performance in Curse of the Golden Flower. Chou also directed the music video for the film's theme song.[4]
Worried that he might be questioned by others for personally directing the movie, Chou refused to let fellow director Andrew Lau on the set. However, a pilot version of the final movie was later sent to Lau.[3]
[edit] Jay Paying Tribute
Jay added in elements in the movie that suggested he was paying tribute to his school and Chopin.
- 淡江中學: 2007 marks the 10th year he left his school. [6] This movie is like a tribute to his school, where he probably has unforgettable memories. In the movie, he incorporated elements which were reflections of his experience in school. For example, in real life he was the school choir pianist. [7] In the movie, he was the orchestra’s pianist and played during high school graduation.
- Chopin: There was several occasions where Jay paid tribute to his favourite composer.
- Right at the beginning of the movie, during lesson, Chopin was being taught in class. Chopin was described as a gifted musician and composer.
- There were 2 paintings in the music room that were supposedly Chopin and his lover(George Sand). The conversation between Ye & Lu were about Chopin and his lover. Ye lamented that the two eventually parted ways. However, Lu seemed envious that the couple was able to spend 10 years together, which to the couple, was possibly a long time.[8] Jay may have added this element (Chopin & lover) because the 10 years was the period of time Chopin produced his most outstanding work.
- Qin Yi (Sky) carried Chopin’s manuscript and kept it in the locker.
- Chopin's Waltz (Op.64 No.2 C# minor) and "Black Key" Etude (Op. 10 No.5) feature in the 斗琴(Piano Duel) scene. Of note, the melodic sequence of the "Black Key" Etude is performed on the black keys (as Chopin intended) followed by a variation using only the white keys, as a demonstration of the players' abilities.

1. Xiang Lun’s father: He was Xiao Yu’s teacher 20 years ago, and took a photo with Xiao Yu on the fateful day she supposedly passed away from an asthma attack. That was why Xiao Yu told Xiang Lun never to play “Secret” in the old music room, which Xiang Lun thought she doesn’t want him to spend time with Qing Yi.

“At first sight makes one’s destiny” After the first time Xiao Yu played “Secret”, Xiang Lun was the first person she set sight on, and that her destiny was tied with him.
That also explains the following scene: 1. Why Xiao Yu closes her eyes and counted her steps from the old piano room to Xiang Lun’s classroom, as well as the scene when after she took her last photo with her teacher, she closed her eyes, slowly climbed the steps leading to the school hall and only opened her eyes when she was outside the school hall. 2. The moment she opened her eyes, she saw Qing Yi. Subsequently during the piano battle, Qin Yi and Xiang Lun exchanged words. However Xiang Lun did not see her in the crowd. 3. There was a scene when Da Yong (大勇) and Xiao Yu hurried covered their eyes when Xiao Yu stepped out of the old piano room. Da Yong commented that he thought she was trying to play her way back (into the past) and apologized for foiling her attempt to look for Xiang Lun.
Le Cygne The Swan[9]
Xiang Lun dueled with his classmate Yu Hao in a piano battle over a manuscript Le Cygne, which he subsequently gave to Xiao Yu.
This was the piece played by the orchestra during the Xiang Lun’s graduation ceremony, Xiang Lun’s present to Xiao Yu.
When Xiang Lun was in Xiao Yu’s room, he saw the manuscript Le Cygne that he gave to her. Xiao Yu’s mother quickly snatched the manuscript from XIang Lun, and found a sketching that XIao Yu did years ago. The sketching was of him.
Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the thirteenth movement of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. This piece features a solo cello in tenor clef and an accompaniment piano. This piece is not to be confused with the famous ballet Swan Lake.
《情人的眼淚》" Lovers Tears" [10]
Yao Su Jung's old song "Lovers’ Tears" is the song that Xiang Lun likes. After school, he brought Xiao Yu to a CD shop. XIang Lun put the headphone on Xiao Yu to let her hear the song he liked, and she was struck. This was the song she liked.
20 years later, when Xiang Lun visited Xiao Yu’s home, this was the music being played, to which her’s mother commented that this was Xiao Yu and her boyfriend’s favorite song.

(1) How to across the spaces? by playing the music "Secret" with normal speed,you can go to the future, and playing quickly, you can go back to the past.
Who can see you? When you across the space, the person who you see first can see you as well, but others can not see you. so in the piano battle scene, Qing could see Xiaoyu,cause she was the first person that Xiaoyu saw that day.
the time in the space 1979 and space1999 are exactly the same. the graduation day of 1979 and 1999 are the same day ,just different year.
(2) After people watched the film, they might thought that Jay went back to 1979, and would live a happy life with Xiaoyu, however, it is not...
Xiaoyu was dead the proof is the hair of Xiaoyu people may find that the time when xiaoyu did not across the space, ie, five months time, her hair was longer than the time when she just met Jay in 1999, and on the graduation day in 1999, when they hug each other, xiaoyu's hair was also longer, but at last scene, when Jay saw xiaoyu in the classroom, her hair was short, just like they first met, and xiaoyu seems does not recognise Jay,so it can be proved that the xiaoyu who loves Jay was dead.
Where did Jay go? the spaces that divide by time can be known as spaceA(1999),spaceB(1979),spaceC(before1979). and we have xiaoyuA in spaceA, xiaoyuB in spaceB, xiaoyuC in spaceC, we only have one Jay in three spaces. the film is mainly about xiaoyuB across the sapceB to reach the spaceA, and fell in love with Jay in spaceA, at last, when Jay knew everything, he wanted to go back to spaceB to meet xiaoyuB , but he went to spaceC by mistake, and in spaceC, he met xiaoyuC, who was just a happy student before she saw the music book'Secert'.
How about graduation photo at last? The photo means that all the students in spaceC can see Jay, it is because the old piano was detroyed by tearing down the old piano room, so the rule of acrossing the space did not in effect anymore.and Jay can not go back to 1999.
how did Jay go to spaceC by mistake? it is because after Jay knew everything, he wanted to go back to spaceB as soon as possible, so he played very fast and long, so he went to spaceC. he played very long, that is the key.
how to change the history? did you remember the scene that when xiaoyuB wrote some characters on the desk, Jay can see it at the same time. That is because the two spaces have the same time period, so when xiaoyuB was writing, it is exactly the same time when Jay was sitting in that same position in 1999, and cause Jay was only person can see xiaoyu then, so he can see her characters on the desk, but xiaoyu can not see his reply, because the future can not influence the past, just the past can change what would happen in the future.
(3) xiaoyuA in spaceA(1999) was exsit. she was a middle aged woman at that time. if you remember that when XiaoyuB and Jay went to the proof of xiaoyu's house, we can clearly see an old lady in the room through the window, the woman had black hair, she is xiaoyuA, ie, the middle age xiaoyu, she had black hair ,so she was xiaoyuA, not her Mum, who got white hair. There is also a scene that xiaoyu's mum bought a lot of apples and the apples droped on the street, Jay helped xiaoyu's mum, those apples were bought for middle-aged xiaoyu, her Mum was a very old lady then.
After Jay knew everything, he went to xiaoyu's house, and asked her Mum whether she was at home, her Mum said yes, "she" was listening the music, here "she" just means the middle-aged xiaoyu, not xiaoyuB.
The old song xiaoyu and Jay both like were also telling us something, the lyric in Chinese means that "I am waiting for you in the old house...with tears...", it also proves that xiaoyuA does exist.
finally, Jay went to the spaceC, the history was changed by his appearence in spaceC, maybe xiaoyuC and Jay live a happy life in spaceC, and xiaoyuC never saw the music book, as I mentioned above, only the past can change the future, the future can not change the past!
anyway, it is just a movie, if you like watching the movie, that is enough... everyone has his or her own "secret", only yourself knows that...

If you look at the ending again where they were preparing to take their 1979 graduation photo, you would notice that Jay and Xiaoyu were helping each others adjust their attire almost like they're lovers. Although it is correct to say that the original Xiaoyu who loves Jay was dead, it is quite likely that they fell in love again after Jay went back into the past (by past I'm referring to the time before Xiaoyu discovered that time travelling music score). It would also not make sense for Jay not to chase after Xiaoyu and make her his girlfriend since he loves her even if she does not remember him.
