Zasalamel (ザサラメール Zasaramēru?) is a fictional character designed for the Soul Series of fighting games, debuting in Soulcalibur III as the lead antagonist and will be returning for Soulcalibur IV. A man of ancient origin who is forced to reincarnate every time his current life ends, his main goal is breaking himself from the circle of reincarnation and attaining a peaceful death. He seeks this end because, after countless lives, he no longer finds joy in living.
Apparently Zasalamel's left eye is a birth mark of sorts because he never loses it when he is reincarnated.
Zasalamel has no qualms when it comes to his plans. He is portrayed as merciless and cold, acting by whatever means needed to assure his plans are fulfilled. He would eliminate any obstacle in his path without second thoughts. Despite this, Tira notes in the Tales of Souls mode that he does have a conscience.
While Zasalamel's origin is never revealed in the games, it's safe to assume he was originally born during the Babylonian time period, due to many of his moves being named after Babylonian gods and myths.

[edit] Background Story
Zasalamel is one of the three starting new characters included in the fourth installment of the saga of video games,Soulcalibur III, alongside Tira and Setsuka. He first appeared on the first promotional trailers of the game as a darkened silhouette, under the titles of both The Enigma and The Mastermind before his real name was revealed. In the game itself, his fighting style and weaponry repertoire is available, in the Character Creation Mode, to characters created under the Saint class.
As stated in his profile, he hails from an ancient tribe that was tasked with the protection of Soulcalibur, many years before the game's set timeframe. Zasalamel was angered by the sect's edicts that forbade the use of the sword; which didn't allow the tribe to use the weapon if a crisis were to occur. When trying to take Soulcalibur in his hands, he was discovered and shunned from the tribe. Zasalamel spent his time later in pursuit of ancient and forbidden knowledge thought lost, until he attained the art of reincarnation.
However, he reincarnated repeatedly over many generations, and gradually lost the joy of living as his existence waned and the pain of death increased. In an attempt to end what he considered a "curse", Zasalamel set his eyes on the Soul Edge. He would use it's soul devouring properties to commit a form of suicide and release himself from the circle of eternal reincarnations. However, even a death by the sword was not enough, so Zasalamel turned his hopes to Soulcalibur, but when he reached the place where his tribe existed, he found no traces of it or the holy sword.
Tracking Soul Edge once again, he discovered the Soulcalibur appeared as well to confront it. He hoped that he may be able to obtain both of them at once; but he discovered the Soul Edge had lost half of its body and become sealed, and the Soulcalibur had been infected by evil, gradually losing its strength. Then, in order to restore both blades to its power, he revived the will of the sword in the form of Nightmare. In order to aid the sword in its restoration, he needed to create conflict within the mind of Siegfried, the bearer of both blades, by leading survivors of Nightmare's past massacres towards him. If Soul Edge regained its strength, so would Soulcalibur in order to confront it.
Zasalamel then takes a role as lead antagonist in most of the game's characters story modes, attempting to eliminate them as he sees them as potential obstacles. Zasalamel has an event of his own in the game's story mode, Tales of Souls, in which he lures the characters into his stage, the Clock Tower, where he then attacks the character first with a falling gear. The player can avoid the gear with a quick input and avoid starting the match with slightly less health. Zasalamel then appears during the last events of the mode, to either confront the player as a sort of "sub-boss" battle or to take the power of both swords to turn into the game's final boss, Abyss.

[edit] Gameplay
Zasalamel is a difficult target. This means of his tremendous tricks and power, along with range. He is a tricky version of Astaroth.
Though not that speedy, still, even a novice player would have victory times even against experts.
[edit] Abyss
Abyss (アビス Abisu?) is one of the two final bosses on Soulcalibur III, being the most commonly found boss on the Tales of Souls story mode and always at the end of the Quick Play mode. He is Zasalamel after a mutation by the powers of both the holy sword and the evil sword. Abyss possesses the same fighting style of Zasalamel, with some moves replaced by unblockable projectile attacks. He can be unlocked as a normal character, but doesn't have a Story Mode nor an ending.
Abyss appears at the final chapters of Tales of Souls, when Zasalamel absorbs the energies of both the Soul Edge and Soulcalibur in an attempt to break his curse of eternal life. Instead, Zasalamel transforms into Abyss and attacks the player's character. Upon his defeat, the chosen character's ending plays.
In Soulcalibur III: Arcade Edition, Abyss is dropped from the character roster and turned into a non-selectable boss alongside Night Terror, both appearing at random at the arcade's end match.
[edit] Weapons
- Kafziel
Zasalamel's standard white and gold scythe. The name comes from Cassiel, an Angel of Death in Jewish lore appointed to take the lives of kings.
- Irkalla
Abyss' standard, and only, weapon. Irkalla is in fact Zasalamel's Kafziel being corrupted by the same energies that mutated Zasalamel himself.[citation needed] The weapon's name comes from the goddess of the netherworld or darkness in the mythology of the Sumerians. It can also be unlocked as Zasalamel's most powerful weapon, obtaining special abilities Abyss' Irkalla doesn't have.
[edit] Stages
- Clock Tower
Zasalamel's stage. It is a stone clock tower stated to be located at the corner of a quiet temple outside the edge of an unnamed town. The stage is placed on the top tier, with the glass clock and the inside mechanism serving as background. It is said Zasalamel visits this place ever since it was constructed since it's the only place which reminds him of the passage of time, having lost his sense of time over the course of his countless lives. He also uses the stage in the Tales of Souls mode as setup to trap those searching Soul Edge, attempting to strike them first with a falling gear before deciding to fight the player.
- Lost Cathedral – Ruins
Abyss' stage. It's actually the remains of the Lost Cathedral, the stage of both Siegfried and Nightmare in Soulcalibur III. The stage is created after Abyss releases his energies, which destroy the temple of purity and corrupt it. While actual layout of the stage doesn't change much, if at all, the background is completely different. The visible ground is red and appears to be at-least partially made of lava, the remaining structure are wrecked or burning, and a volcano is visible in the backgound. In the Arcade Version of the game, the stage is given to one of the sub-bosses, Inferno, while Abyss is given Night Terror's stage.
[edit] Endings
- Input Ending: In the spiritual realm, Zasalamel is circled by the two floating swords. With his scythe overhead, Zasalamel absorbs the power of Soul Edge and Soulcalibur and a bright white light appears. Zasalamel's thoughts are heard as he chronicles the end of his curse in a study filled with books. Now that the curse has ended, Zasalamel has decided to write down all that he experienced during his many lives. All he has to do is wait until his time comes.
- No Input Ending: In the spiritual realm, Zasalamel is circled by the two floating swords. With his scythe overhead, Zasalamel absorbs the power of Soul Edge and Soulcalibur but when the light fades and his scythe is gone he is still the same, immortal and cursed. Zasalamel sinks to his knees with misery and questions why he can't die; he hits the ground with his fists and laughs insanely. He states how everything is over, then laments how he has no choice but to continue "this meaningless existence".
