[edit] Response to your message
Hi there and thanks for the message at 07:45, January 5, 2008. I use 1280x1024 but when I change layouts on articles I always check how it looks at 800x600. As the article is a GA nominee I wanted to ensure that the Manual of style is applied to the article, but I ran out of time before I could finish what I was doing. The general preference is for right-alignment but I am not personally bothered. I have changed some of the layout and propose to change the following things:
-
- Moved the logo into the infobox and added links to all the towns.
- The first image, Image:Khi1851.jpg, should be right-aligned.
- Sections with multiple images should be staggered right-and-left. However the first image in each section should be right-aligned because this avoids disconnecting the section heading from the text below.
- Avoid specifying the size of a thumbnail image so that it displays according to user preferences (default being 180px).
- Add as many relevant images from related articles as possible - such as images of Charles Napier and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, because of the role they have played in the history of the city. Another ideal image would be the current Nazim which could be added to the Government section.
- If we end up with more images than could possibly fit into the article, I am strongly opposed to the use of a gallery. Instead I propose we use a template to rotate groups of relevant images. For an example please see {{History of Pakistan rotation}}, which is being used on the History of Pakistan article.
- The images should have clear titles in line with the official policy. In particular the following should be uploaded again with better names:
-
- Image:Mausoleum123.jpg --> Image:Mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Karachi.jpg
- Image:CDGKlogo.svg --> Image:Logo of Karachi.svg
- Image:Khi1851.jpg --> Image:Karachi in 1851,jpg
- Image:STS087-715-70.jpg --> Image:Satellite view of Karachi.jpg
- Image:PNSC1.jpg --> Image:Pakistan National Shipping Corporation building.jpg
- Image:56635.jpg --> Image:National Cricket Stadium, Karachi.jpg
-
- The quality of some of the images is not as good it should be. In particular I am concerned about the following:
-
- Image:STS087-715-70.jpg does not indicate cardinal directions so uninformed readers will not have a frame of reference.
- Image:PNSC1.jpg needs to be cropped so that it shows more of the building and less of the water, whilst not excluding the water altogether.
- Image:KarachiFinancial.jpg focuses on the Shahrah-e-Faisal road and should be replaced by a skyline image - as an example see Image:Willis_building_skyline.jpg which is used for the City of London article.
- Image:Aga Khan University.jpg looks like a computer-generated image that might have been used in promotional literature. There is some Urdu script on the tree at the bottom left of the image which spoils the image.
- Image:56635.jpg, showing the cricket stadium is Ok but it would be better if we could get an image like Image:Wembley Panorama-England Vs Italy U21s.jpg which shows a match inside Wembley stadium.
- Image:KhiDHA.jpg is not a brilliant photo because it purports to show a neighbourhood in DHA but at the source of the image in Flickr there is no mention of this. There are no clear signs which would identify the neighbourhood, so it could really be anywhere in the world. Also the blurring of the cars at the right of the image spoils the photo.
I hope that is a simple enough plan as far as images are concerned. :) Green Giant (talk) 05:31, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Education policy
Has the English speaking elite in Pakistan finally obtained enough courage to get rid of Urdu? It would seem to me, living Ireland ( most of the country having 'benefited' from British colonial rule) that the imposition of English medium education is a form of neo colonialism. Would like to hear your views. Eog1916 (talk) 11:04, 9 February 2008 (UTC)eog1916
The fact that Urdu is to be taught as a subject is not at issue. What has changed is that the opportunity for the ordinary pupil ( not the sons and daughters of the anglicised elite who can afford private schooling) to access education in Urdu is to be restricted. Eog1916 (talk) 20:19, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Dear Zain, Thank you for imparting your views. You must now count yourself as truly 'British Councilised' or is it 'US Aidised'. Certainly you are well on the way to becoming one of Macaulay's children! Presumably this was not a conscious decision on your part but was a 'gift' of your parents?Eog1916 (talk) 10:39, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
RE:"I noticed you reverted my deletion of the news of conversion of colleges to English-medium in Karachi. This news really is no big deal. Certainly not enough to merit mention on the main Pakistan article. There are thousands upon thousands of English-medium institutions in Pakistan. Addtion of 18 more certainly dosen't [sic] change the big picture, does it? " Well, who am I to decide on such matters? After all I live in a democracy where such matters are freely discussed in the media ( which is mostly uncensored and therefore free to report such matters.) Maybe you are used to unquestioning obedience to the regime that is the Government in Pakistan or maybe you have been programmed not to ask WHY? If the State apparatus decided to change the medium of instruction in a democratic State. at a stroke, then one could expect there to be protests in the streets and the media would have a field day. You would have me believe that there is no opposition to the imposition of English in favour of Urdu and that this is a 'win win situation' for all! If I ask why the US or the UK is willing to fund this imposition you will have me believe that it is on purely philantrophic and was done on sound educational grounds, and that the 'war on terror'[sic] did not influence the matter. What are the repercussions of an English-medium education policy on the future of Urdu or Islam for that matter? There is already under funding for the provision of Urdu educational resources (not to mention Punjabi, Sindhi etc), and given the reduction in the numbers that will study through the medium of these languages surely the shift to English will influence the 'economies of scale' in the Urdu (and other native language) print industry and make the situation even more critical.
You say that there is "No need to mention that English is being taught from an earlier age now than before." but you fail to say WHY! In my culture it is seen as patronizing and condescending behaviour or just as plain rude to expect others to accept statements or pronouncements without backing them up with facts or reasonable arguments. We don't operate in a 'master and slave' context....not since the Middle Ages! Eog1916 (talk) 11:48, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Non-free use disputed for Image:Bhutto assassin 1.png
Thanks for uploading Image:Bhutto assassin 1.png. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Megapixie (talk) 23:04, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Hashim khan.jpg
I have placed a template on the page for Image:Hashim khan.jpg which you uploaded noting that its source has not been provided.
I am also very I'm very sceptical about your claim that the picture was take in 1952. This page [1] contains confirmed pictures of Hashim Khan from 1954, and he looks A LOT younger in these pictures that he does in the picture you uploaded which you say was taken in 1952. [edit] Urdu
Salaam Zaindy87, thank you for your edits on the Urdu article. Recently, I reverted unconstructive edits made by a user who is now blocked. I wanted to let you know that I was not intending to revert your edits, which fixed some errors on the vandalised version of the article. The earlier version to which I reverted actually matched your edits. I just thought I would inform you. Thanks again for edits! With regards, AnupamTalk 04:10, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bhutto assassin 1.png)
Thanks for uploading Image:Bhutto assassin 1.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
