[edit] Appearances
Zack Busner is a recurring character in the fiction of Will Self, appearing in the short story collections The Quantity Theory of Insanity, Grey Area, Dr. Mukti and Other Tales of Woe, and in the novels Great Apes and The Book of Dave.
It can be difficult at times to piece together a timeline for Dr Busner and it is not even certain whether the author intends there to be a coherent storyline. The fact that Dr Busner appears to die/be absorbed by Simon Dykes in the Story "Inclusion. This could reasonably be taken as an end point except that both characters reappear for Great Apes.
His appearance in "Dr Mukti" and in "Ward 9" would seem to happen at around the same time as he is holding down the same institutional position in both. References to Busner's previous work in "Ward 9" indicate that this is set after "The Quantum Theory of Insanity."
[edit] Inspiration
Busner is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst practicing in London, and is prone to self-promotion at the expense of his patients. He is often the antagonist of the stories he appears in, although not always with villainous intent. It has been suggested that the character is based on the psychiatrist R. D. Laing[1] and the neurologist Oliver Sacks[2]
