Zachary Baumel (born November 17, 1960) is an Israeli MIA soldier. Baumel, a dual American-Israeli was a sergeant in the IDF. He along with four other Israeli soldiers were captured in the battle of Sultan Yacoub on June 11, 1982. Two of the soldiers were later exchanged, however Baumel's fate along with two others has yet to be determined.
Time Magazine reporter and journalist, Dean Brelis was the last to report seeing Baumel alive, as he and fellow captives were taunted during a "Victory Parade" as Hezbollah paraded the captured tank through Damascus.
In 1999 President Clinton signed into law House Resolution 1175 - "A Bill to Locate and Secure the Release of Zachary Baumel, an American Citizen and Other Israelis Missing in Action"
In 2006, The Baumel family successfully filed a suit against the Syrian government on behalf of Zachary Baumel through the Foreign Sovereign Immunities act.
