Yvonne Jones
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yvonne Jones is a Canadian politician and interim leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. She currently represents the riding of Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, and was one of only three Liberal incumbents in the entire province to retain her seat in the 2007 provincial election.
She was first elected in the 1996 election as an independent candidate, defeating two-term Liberal MHA Danny Dumaresque, after losing the Liberal nomination for the riding to Dumaresque. She later joined the Liberal caucus in the legislature, and was reelected as a Liberal in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
On November 15, 2007, she was officially named the interim leader of the Liberal Party. She is the first woman to lead the Liberal Party of Newfoundland. One of her first stated goals as leader is to abolish all political parties in the province and adopt a consensus government system much like that used in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
