Yuzhno-Kurilsky District

Yuzhno-Kurilsky District (Russian: Ю́жно-Кури́льский район), or South Kurile District, is a district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia.

It comprises the southernmost part of the Kuril chain with the islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomai rocks. District's population: 9,727 (2002 Census).

The district seat is the urban-type settlement of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, situated on Kunashir.

The district in its entirety along with the island of Iturup is claimed by Japan. According to the Japanese, these islands belong to Nemuro Subprefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture.
