[edit] Biography

Yusif Kuwa Mekki was born in 1945. He is a national of the Miri tribe. He was educated in Northern Sudan. He graduated from Khartoum University and went to Darfur to become a teacher. Prior to completing his college education he considered himself an Arab.

[edit] Political Life

Yusif Kuwa began to understand the nature of conflict in Sudan. Although Sudan is a country of multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-language societies, the politics of Sudan in all its corners has created the views that there are the marginalized and the privileged. This influenced Mr. Mekki's thinking and he decided to join the popular Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement under the strong leadership of Dr. John Garang De Mabior.

[edit] Life in The Bush

Mr. Yusif Kuwa became a commander in The Sudanese People's Liberation Army. He was appointed a member of the Military High Command. He was the 10th in rank. John Garang was followed by Kerubino Kuanyin Bol, William Nyuon Bany, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, Arok Thon Arok, Nyaciluk Nyachigak, John Kulang, Riek Machar, Lam Akol, and then Commander Mekki. After were James Wani Igga, Daniel Awet Akot, Kuol Manyang Juuk and others. When a split took place in the SPLA in 1991 Commander Mekki gained higher position due to the fact that he was one of those who did not turn his back to John Garang. He often sees his future with Southern Sudan.
