Background information

Yumiko Kokonoe (九重佑三子) is a Japanese actress. She is the protagonist of the series Comet San (or Kometto San) filmed by Tokyo Broadcasting Corporation between 1967 and 1969. Outside of Japan, Kokonoe achieved her greatest popularity in Latin America and particularly in Mexico where Comet San was dubbed into Spanish (Señorita Cometa) and remains a major cult icon to this day.

The series ran throughout the 1970s and early 1980s in Mexico. The original Spanish language dubbed tapes of the series were destroyed when the Televisa building collapsed during the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake. Only four homemade tapes of the Spanish version survive. Yumiko Kokonoe is the most famous Japanese person in Mexico.

79 episodes of Cometo-san were produced during 1967 and 1968 by Japan Tokyo Broadcast Corporation (TBS).

In the 2002 Japanese / Korean World Cup Mexican comedian Andrés Bustamante contacted and interviewed Yumiko in his space in a national TV sports program and let her know that all Mexico still love and remember her as "La Señorita Cometa". That was the last time that she was on the Mexican TV.
