[edit] Background

Yuka is a practitioner of karate who resides in Tokyo. After her parents died when she was young, her grandfather took her in and trained her in the martial arts, including Karate and the manipulation of ki energy. She enters the VG tournaments simply for the purpose of furthering her training and testing herself against strong opponents. Her virtuous, outgoing personality wins her many friends among the other fighters, among whom are Chiho Masuda, Jun Kubota, and Satomi Yajima, the latter of whom she has been best friends with for years.

[edit] Fictional Character History

[edit] V.G.: Variable Geo

Yuka enters the V.G. tournament for the first time in order to test her limits. She meets and defeats Jun, Chiho, Manami Kusunoki, and Kaori Yanase, advancing to the finals where she faces Reimi Jahana and defeats her. This would be the start of a long rivalry with Reimi that would later grow into a grudging friendship.

[edit] Advanced V.G.

In this remake of the first game, Yuka fights her way to the top, encountering Jun, Chiho, and Manami, while also battling Ayako Yuuki, Erina Goldsmith, and her good friend Satomi before going on to face Kaori and Reimi, who talks down to Yuka and even goes as far to destroy a part of Hanna Miller's in attempting to goad Yuka into a fight. After taking the V.G. title away from Reimi, Yuka is confronted by a pair of genetically engineered fighters known as "Hybrids". She defeats K-1, the elder, male fighter, who is in turn tortured by his female counterpart K-2. Enraged, Yuka engages and defeats K-2.

Miranda Jahana, Reimi's mother and the creator of K-1 and K-2 appears and kills her creations, citing them as being worthless due to their emotions. Yuka, unable to bear such cruelty, attacks Miranda, who easily counters her and tosses her aside before leaving. Yuka is emotionally shaken by this encounter, after which Reimi, now reformed, encourages her to keep fighting. Yuka gives Reimi her ribbon as a sign of friendship before disappearing for one year. It is speculated that Yuka either defaulted the championship to Satomi after this or simply gave her the prize money, as Satomi's younger brother Daisuke is shown in subsequent games to have recovered from the illness that forced Satomi to fight in V.G.

[edit] Advanced V.G. 2

After her encounter with Miranda and the K-Series Hybrids, Yuka experiences an emotional breakdown, which causes her to be unable to focus her spiritual energies towards fighting. At this point, she is approached by V.G. newcomer Tamao Mitsurugi, who claims to be a great fan of Yuka's and asks her to train her. They work through the tournament together, and through combat with Jun and Reimi, who remind her of her dedication to be the best, as well as inspiration from Tamao, who has complete confidence in her instructor, Yuka is able to overcome her emotional conflict and regain her abilities.

She is later pitted against her own student in one of the tournament's final matches and is defeated when Tamao is somehow able to reflect her own technique back at her. Yuka is then forced to watch as Tamao battles the sadistic Saki Shindou in the tournament's final match. After claiming victory, Tamao is attacked by twin girls who deeply resemble K-1 and K-2. Created by Reimi's mother Miranda Jahana, the two girls, both called Material, are the latest model of "Hybrid" super soldiers made to replace the K-series, who were deemed a failure by Miranda. Teaming up, Yuka and Tamao defeat the twin Materials and then go on to confront and defeat Miranda herself. Afterwards, Miranda prepares to escape, promising to create another Hybrid that can surpass even Material. However, Reimi appears alongside her father, Ryuichi Jahana, on a monitor in Miranda's lair and informs her that they've successfully managed to erase her influence over the Jahana Group. Miranda curses this betrayal as she flees to her private jet at a nearby airfield.

Although Yuka and Tamao give chase, they are too late, arriving just as Miranda's jet takes off from the runway. Reimi, Kaori, Jun, Satomi, and Chiho's relative Kyoko Kirishima arrive shortly thereafter, informing the pair that Chiho sneaked on board the plane before takeoff. Chiho then speaks over a radio in Reimi's car, telling the others that she has failed to stop Miranda, and the only way to end things now is to have everyone channel their ki together and destroy the plane while it is still relatively close. Although Tamao insists that they cannot, seeing as how Chiho would be killed in the explosion as well, Yuka and Kyoko convince her that Chiho was prepared to make such a sacrifice from the very start in order to end Miranda's insanity. The group combines their powers, unleashing a massive ki blast that destroys the plane, killing Miranda and seemingly Chiho as well.

Some time later, Yuka, Satomi, and Tamao erect a makeshift memorial in Chiho's honor. As they lament her sacrifice, Chiho appears behind them, having somehow escaped the plane before it exploded.

[edit] Other Appearances

Yuka is a playable character in V.G. 2: Clash of Cabalistic Goddess, Super V.G., V.G. Custom, and V.G. Max, all of which exist outside of the series' canon.

[edit] Anime

Yuka is once again the main character in the three-part OVA series based on Super Variable Geo. She is voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi in this appearance. She is largely the same here as in the games, including her close friendship with Satomi Yajima, although here they are depitcted as sharing an unexplained psychic bond.

She is quickly introduced when she arrives late to Hanna Miller's. Shortly after conversing with an unnamed coworker and the store manager, she is challenged to a bout by wrestler Jun Kubota. The two fight and seem evenly matched. However, Jun gains the upper hand and is about to finish Yuka off when Satomi, who had been watching from the sidelines, begins cheering for Yuka intensely. Yuka, stirred by the fact that their bond allows her to feel Satomi's emotions firsthand, is able to rally and defeat Jun by using a powerful energy blast. Although Yuka's win was decided to be at a low level, and thus not requiring Jun to suffer the penalty of having to shed her clothing in front of the crowd who had come to watch the fight, Jun decides to strip naked of her own accord, teaching Yuka that a VG warrior must be prepared to face glory at any cost, especially that of her dignity and shame. Immediately following this, Yuka gets into an altercation with a mysterious old man who is enjoying viewing the now nude Jun with lecherous glee. He is surprisingly able to evade a slap from Yuka, and snuggles close to her bosom, reitterating Jun's earlier statement and adding that he wouldn't mind seeing Yuka lose. The old man walks away, joined by an equally mysterious young girl as Yuka is left baffled.

Later, after visiting Satomi's brother Daisuke, who is confined to a hospital bed due to an unnamed disease, she is approached by a now friendly Jun, who invites her to go for a drive on her motorcycle. By chance, a red sports car being driven by the current V.G. champion, Reimi Jahana, pulls up behind them on the highway. Reimi and Yuka notice each other's respective psychic auras, which causes Yuka to jump from the back of Jun's motorcycle and attempt to strike Reimi out of instinct. Reimi blocks the assault with one hand and manages to shatter the helmet Yuka is wearing at the same time. What happens after this is unexplained, but Yuka is next seen back on the motorcycle, so it would seem that she rebounded from Reimi's block and somehow managed not to offset the vehicle's balance when landing.

Following this, Yuka decides to pay Satomi a visit in her home, but finds the place empty. A note is left written in Satomi's blood which only reads "Farewell". The next day, Yuka and Jun visit Daisuke again, only to find that he is now suffering worse than before. While mulling this over, Yuka receives an anonymous phone call from someone who simply says "Osaka" before hanging up.

Believing it to be the location of her next tournament opponent, Yuka and Jun head there on Jun's motorcycle (Arriving in an unusually short amount of time due to Jun's reckless driving habits). Once in Osaka, Yuka is suddenly Groped by a young girl who introduces herself as Manami Kusunoki, and who offers to take the two to Yuka's opponent in exchange for the earlier molestation. She leads them to a roadside food stand where they spend the next few hours waiting. Eventually, a group of women in bunny outfits appear, led by the violent waitress Erina Goldsmith. After ordering her bunny underlings to attack and watching them get defeated by Manami and Jun, She challenges Yuka to a fight.

Although Erina seems to dominate the ensuing bout with her mastery of several powerful energy manipulating techniques, Yuka uses her spiritual powers to accept Erina's energy, which is fueled by anger and hatred. She then defeats Erina with her Kikoudan technique and shows her the error of fighting simply for the sake of violence. She then introduces herself to Erina, who exclaims that her opponent was supposed to be Manami Kusunoki. Manami reveals that she was the one who had called Yuka to Osaka to fight Erina in her place because she was certain that the bunny girl would beat her.

Returning to Tokyo with Manami in tow, Yuka and Jun stop by the dojo where Yuka trains. They arrive only to find all of the students unconscious. A strange, white-haired man knocks out Jun and Manami with ease, and proceeds to attack Yuka. He savagely beats her because she cannot seem to access her energy. As he is about to strike again, Yuka is saved by the old man she had met earlier. The white-haired man experiences a mental breakdown and is evacuated by an unknown woman. The next morning, Yuka laments over the fact that the man she had faced seemed to generate no emotion, and that not being able to understand his feelings had weakened her in the fight. After discussing the aesthetics of combat with the old man, she is told by Jun and Manami that Daisuke has made a full recovery. The trio goes to see him, which causes Yuka to worry about what has happened to Satomi. While trying to use her psychic bond to check to see if Satomi is alright, she senses another presence in Satomi's mind. This presence (In actuality the spirit of Miranda Jahana, Reimi's deceased mother who is attempting to possess Satomi) shows hostility toward Yuka, prompting her, along with Jun and Manami, to go in search of Satomi.

Yuka and company arrive at the site of the VG finals, where they are attacked by a brainwashed Chiho Matsuda. Jun and Manami usher Yuka to hurry ahead while they fight off the ninja. Inside the tournament colisseum, Yuka is confronted by Damien, the man responsible for Satomi's disappearance. He ingests a number of capsules, which cause him to transform into the white-haired man who had attacked Yuka previously. They then fight, and while Yuka is able to hold her own this time, Damien experiences another mental break. Siritahi, the woman who had evacuated Damien during his previous encounter with Yuka, attempts to pacify him by shooting a chemical compound into his neck as she had before. However, Damien proves to have developed an immunity to this compound and rages out of control.

After killing a pair of scientists who had arrived on the scene with Siritahi, he once again targets Yuka, who is eventually able to force her way into his memories and discern his reason for fighting - He was once a member of the Jahana group who volunteered to be used as a guinea pig in experiments that would be used to bring Miranda back to life. Now understanding her opponent at long last, Yuka is able to use the full force of her powers and defeats Damien, whose real name is revealed to be Katu. As Katu dies in Siritahi's arms as a result of the effect the experiments and subsequent fighting have had on his body, Siritahi urges Yuka to stop Miranda, who has taken over Satomi's body.

Upon finding Satomi, who is now connected to a device that binds Miranda to her body, Yuka is told that Satomi's body is not powerful enough to survive having Miranda's spirit as a part of it. Yuka is then issued an ultimatum: allow Miranda to possess her instead, or watch as Satomi dies. Refusing both choices, Yuka instead attacks the device, freeing Satomi from Miranda's control. Yuka and Satomi then deliver a final attack, completely destroying the device and forcing Miranda's spirit back into its interim container, a white rose, which is subsequently destroyed by Reimi.

As the building they are in is engulfed in a series of explosions, Yuka and Satomi face each other in the match they have always wanted. Satomi inquires if the loser of this match will be forced to strip naked, to which Yuka only replies that the winner will get the ten-billion Yen reward for winning the tournament. The two charge each other smiling as the series ends.

[edit] Trivia

  • Yuka is an example of the "Hero" archetype of fighting game characters. More specifically, she seems to be somewhat of a parody of Ryu, as many of Yuka's personality traits and fighting techniques are very similar to Ryu's.
  • Hanna Miller's is a parody of Anna Miller's, a real-life chain of restaurants in Hawaii and Japan. Yuka's uniform is closely modeled after the Anna Miller's waitress uniform.
  • Yuka is notable as often being drawn with a much larger bust size than her printed measurements state, a similarity she shares with Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series..
  • Although V.G. Neo, the latest game in the series, features an all-new cast and drops the majority of the previous characters, a character named Misty, who appears in the game's OVA adaptation is speculated to be Yuka in disguise. However, Misty, while having a similar appearance to Yuka, does not share either of her previous seiyuu.
  • Yuka also makes an appearance outside of the V.G. series. Yuka is an unlockable character in the survival mode of Duel Savior Justice, where her move list has been expanded upon to fit with Duel Savior's battle system. She gains a double jump, an aerial projectile, an Akuma styled dive kick, a follow-up to her rushing kick special as well as a super variation of the same move and finally a ShinShoryuken styled super. Yuka is slated to make a return appearance in Scramble Savior (part of Xross Scramble - Team BALDRHEAD Perfect Collection), where she is joined by her successor from V.G. Neo, Yuu Asuka.[1][2]
