[edit] History of the Yubbe community, land and climate

Just as Somalia is called "a nation of nomads", the Yubbe Community too were nomads. They did not live in one place but travelled across the plains, staying in each place for only a few weeks or a few months before they moved on. As water is Somalia's scarcest resource, the people had to travel many miles to find food and water for their sheep, goats, cattle and camels.

The Yubbe community started its first permanent settlement in 1969 when its founder, the late Mohammad Hassan "Isdeldel" dug a well 60 km east of Erigavo, the Capital of the Sanaag Region. The well which has a depth of 100 feet provides drinking water to the village through two troughs which are fed by a water tank 100 feet from the well. As soon as water was available, families began to build new houses and so a permanent settlement was established. This was the birth of the Yubbe Village which today is home to about 5000 families.

Somalia is a hot, dry and hard land which receives a small and unreliable annual rainfall to support the few areas of grassland and scattered acacia trees. So like most Somalis, the Yubbe Community members are very poor and have a low standard of living and struggle to exist on a day-by-day basis. The only water available is through two community wells.

Yubbe has one of the oldest schools in the region which was founded in 1972. The town has strong internal administration headed by its Chief Akil, Akil Bashir Du'ale Abdi. In August 2007 Maakhir Authority declared the town as district

[edit] Yubbe School

The Yubbe School was founded in 1972 by the former Somali government, it started as one classroom, one teacher, years later an additional classroom was built by the Yubbe Community, the school continued to operate very successfully until the fall of the last Somali Government. When the government was overthrown the clans emerged, violent and fighting for power. All of Somalia has become a battlefield – the cities, the plains and the villages.

The common Somalis can no longer manage their traditional way of life. This has made it increasingly difficult for the people to survive. Hundreds of thousands have died and over a million have fled to safety in other countries. Like the schools in other parts of Somalia, the Yubbe School had to close its doors. Few years later the school was re-opened by two volunteer teachers, the parents were asked to provide their children's supplies.

This programme continued until much needed help came from the Yubbe community members in North America, the Middle East and Europe, they would often raise money. This money would be used to pay the teachers' salaries, to construct new classroom blocks and to improve the facilities of the school. This might involve buying new furniture and new text books.

The community members in North America have raised enough money to build four additional classrooms, also the community members in the Middle East have raised enough money to furnish the entire school; however, current priorities are expanding the school to incorporate the provision of the secondary school.
