[edit] Lord Yu's namesake
It has been said in this article that the System Lord Yu was named after the founder of the Xia dynasty.
However, in the fifth season episode "Summit," Daniel Jackson, acting as Yu's personal slave, announces his master by saying, "I represent the Jade Emperor, the exalted Lord Yu Hang Shang-Ti." That's what the captions say, what they meant is "Yu Huang Shangdi," which basically repeats that he's the Jade Emperor.
Now while the Jade Emperor was basically a good god, it could be argued that Yu was a fairly decent Goa'uld. Ya know, as far as these guys can be good.
The point is, Daniel himself names Lord Yu the Jade Emperor, which is not the same as Yu the Great, founder of the Xia dynasty. Sharprs 11:03, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
- I was watching the episode Fair game recently where Daniel describes Yu as "Yu the Great" and says that "he did not assume the role of a god parcé, but may have been one of China's first emperors" and also that he "possesed great mythic powers and sprang to the world out of a dragon's body". I do not have much info on either the historical or the religious Yu, but when looking at the article of Yu the Great, that seems to match Daniels descriptions best.
- Could it be that Daniel has over the course of the series changed his mind on the actual historical identity of Yu? ---ramz- ask? 23:58, 2 April 2006 (CET)
I clarify the confusion. I am a Chinese so I know. I detected the contradiction immediately when watching the episode Summit. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 07:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] demise
It was never revealed if he was killed or seriously wounded in the episode. Besides, with their sarcophagi, they could revive him even from death. Do keep the sentence "presumed deceased" in the article, please until we learn otherwise in an episode.MPaquette 16:44, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Pronunciation of "Yu": Trivia section
I'm altering this entry because, though I'm not a Stargate fan or expert, as I was looking through this article, I noticed that, in response to the obvious pun on Lord Yu's name with the English "you", someone felt the need to point out that the "u" would be closer to the French pronunciation than the English. While I'm sure this is true, based on what little I know of Chinese, does it really matter? Does it in any way contribute to the article? Yes, I realize that it's in the trivia section, but this isn't really show related trivia--it's linguistics related trivia at best. I don't think I'll be checking back to see if it has been re-added, but a show of restraint would make this a much better article. Here's the deleted text:
-
- If Yu's name does actually follow the way "Yuhuang Shangdi" is pronounced in Mandarin Chinese, then Yu should not be pronounced "yoo", like the English word "you". Instead, the "u" is to be pronounced like the French "u" or the German "ü" (IPA: [y]). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Reverend Distopia (talk • contribs) 22:40, 27 February 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Recent reverts on trivia (the hat)
Just click on Qing Dynasty and look at the black and white pictures at the lower part. For your convenience, I'll include them here
Now, let's look at some one from the previous dynasty, Ming Dynasty

Okay. So? JBK405 01:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
- As I have said, Goa'uld are supposed to pretend ancient figures, mortal or not. Why would a Goa'uld wear something that is established only after the 1600's. This is a blatant production sloppiness. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 01:23, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm no expert on Chinese history/culture (I make no claim to being one) so I can't say anything about the hat itself, but the SGC has encountered many cultures and civilizations which emerged after (Sometimes long after) the Goa'uld were expelled from Earth in 3,000 BC (Inclduing Hindu deities which emerged after the rebellion, Meso-American societies which rose and fell in the AD era, and second-millenium Christianity). The Goa'uld used the second Stargate in Antarctica to take (and tamper with) various human societies from Earth even after they stopped ruling the place, Yu could easily have stopped by, too. - Fine, you give some valid points. Baal could wear a modern suit if he wants to... --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib)
