Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen

Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen is a Welsh Medium comprehensive school in the village of Church Village near Pontypridd, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales.

The school was originally established in 1962 in the village of Rhydyfelin near Pontypridd.

It was the second Welsh language comprehensive school established in Wales.

The first headmaster was Gwilym Humphreys and 80 pupils were on the school roll in the first year.

The school magazine was called Na Nog. It was published annually.

Today approximately 930 students are on the school roll, including 160 students studying at sixth form.[1]

About 92 percent of pupils come from homes where the main language is English and only eight percent from homes where Welsh is the main language.[2]

In 2006, the school moved to a new site as part of the Gartholwg campus complex in Church Village.

Entertainers include Martin Geraint popular children's entertainer, the multi-talented Geraint Benney, and celebrity TV cook Dudley Newberry

Entrepreneurs include Ian Jindal[4] former Head of Online Operations (1998-2000) at the BBC, and financial expert Darran Phillips

Journalists and broadcasters include BBC television and radio broadcaster Alun Thomas, and Ciaran Jenkins (brother of Bethan Jenkins AM)

Politicians include Bethan Jenkins Assembly Member for South Wales West, and political academic Dafydd Trystan Davies former Chief Executive of Plaid Cymru

Sports-players include footballer Owain Warlow, Kevin Morgan the Welsh international rugby player and Gareth Jones from Nelson, Wales the super-strong power lifter.

Writers and poets include Gwyneth Lewis first National Poet for Wales , dramatist Ian Rowlands, author Gwyn Morgan (writer) and Gavin Courtney author of the New York Times Bestseller "How asian are you?".

Doctors and Scientists Include Karl Love, Stephanie Foulkes, Luke Evans, Ian Gillam, Donna Khalil, Richard Laszlo and Gwyn Jones

Huw Bunford guitarist in the rock band, Super Furry Animals was former Head of Art at the school.
