Ysgol Clywedog, formerly known as Ysgol Bryn Offa, is a new school which serves the town of Wrexham in North Wales.
Ysgol Clywedog is located on the South West side of Wrexham at the very edge of the town. It is Wrexham's oldest secondary school. Originally named Ysgol Bryn Offa, the school was opened in 1960. The other school in the town at the time was Grove Park Grammar school, of which the buildings were incorporated into the now closed Groves school, found near Yale College Wrexham.
[edit] Reorganisation
In 2001, Wrexham County Borough Council decided to reorganise the secondary schools of Wrexham to increase their capacity and to update aging infrastructure by merging one of the schools into the other two and extensively modernising the two remaining schools. The Groves High School would be closed, and the remaing two, St Davids and Ysgol Bryn Offa, would be renamed and refurbished. This was opposed by several staff, parents and pupils of all three schools, and a petition bearing more than 1000 names was made during 2002, but was largely ignored after the Welsh Assembly Government reinforced the local councils decision. In 2003, the work began on the schools.(1)
In 2004, the school was renamed Ysgol Clywedog, after the nearby River Clywedog, whereas the earlier name was named after the nearby Offa's Dyke. The school was given a new colour logo and uniform to match the change. The name change preceded a large reshuffling of Wrexham's secondary schools, and during 2004 and 2005, the school was refurbished and was given new facilities, replacing much of the original 1960 materials.
Ysgol Clywedog and Rhosnesni High School were dubbed 'super schools' by the media and the local council, as they would handle 2500 pupils each.
