Youth Federation for World Peace

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Youth Federation for World Peace is a large organization of young professionals whose purpose is to encourage world peace.

In 1994, young professional leaders convened in Washington, D.C. and Beijing, China, to dedicate and launch the international Youth Federation for World Peace. Inspired by the peacemaking vision of the Universal Peace Federation, this new generation of leaders from diverse social, political and cultural backgrounds joined together to launch YFWP around the common goal of global peacemaking across the boundaries of culture, race, nationality and religion.

As of April 2008 the Youth Federation for World Peace (YFWP) had 15,000 Young Ambassadors for Peace and chapters in 61 countries. The new global headquarters is based in Washington, DC. The YFWP works closely with other allied organizations like MEPI (Middle East Peace Initiative) and along with alliance partners has sponsored peace building programs in the Middle East and South East Asia.

International figures have joined numerous YFWP Youth Congresses to add their strong support for the voice of youth in global peacemaking, including former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, British Prime Minister Sir Edmund Heath, President Rodrigo Carazo of Costa Rica, Prime Minister Aziz Sidky of Egypt, Ambassador Douglas MacArthur II, Dr. Stoyan Ganev (former president of the UN General Assembly), youth violence prevention movement leader Robert Woodson, leading youth cultural artists including the Kirov Ballet, and other prominent leaders from every sector of life.

On August 12, 2006, during the United Nations International Youth Day, YFWP held an historic peacemaker rally with 25,000 young leaders who gathered at Arneta Coliseum in the Philippines. YFWP International President and Service for Peace founder Hyun Jin Preston Moon urged youth leaders to dream big, as he was joined by the Philippine Speaker of the House Jose Devenecia, and key organizers from youth entrepreneurship, universities and cultural organizations.

As a part of the YFWP global launch, NGOs and community service leaders joined together with the UN Association of the Philippines, YFWP, Service for Peace, and scores of grassroots youth organizations and university participants to promote homebuilding with student volunteers in the slums of Baseco.

A subsequent peacemaker rally with 5,000 young leaders at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea, followed, and the vision for the 2008 Global Youth Peacemaker Festival was conceived. Along with the launch of this 2008 Global Festival, YFWP leaders from every Continent have agreed to work across the boundaries of culture and religion, and rally resources to resolve the current conflicts in places like the Middle East, Africa, and Northeast Asia.

YFWP is also committed to creating a global culture of service through dynamic partnerships that can end extreme poverty and achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals.
