Young Turks (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Young Turks" (also known as "Young Hearts Be Free Tonight," the song's chorus) is a 1981 song by Rod Stewart that first appeared on the Tonight I'm Yours album. The song peaked at number 5 on US Hot 100 chart and 11 on the UK Singles Chart. This was the second hit single that drummer Carmine Appice co-wrote with the Rod-man.

The song also appeared in 2004 on the soundtrack for Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The B-Side is Tora, Tora, Tora.[citation needed]

Story

The song's verses follow two young lovers (Billy and Patty), Patty being seventeen and Billy unspecified, but probably around that age as well. Both leave their homes without the consent of their parents, and only the girl is shown to have left behind any sort of note for her parents ("Patty packed her bags/and left a note for her mama" and later "There were tears in her eyes as she kissed her little sister good bye").

In the next verse they are in a seedy lodging that is "Jumping every night of the week." They don't care though, as "Happiness is found in each other's arms."

After a few minutes of variations on the chorus, the next verse (presumably a short while into the future) has Billy writing a letter to Patty's parents, saying that they didn't want it to come to them running away, but if their parents wouldn't listen to them there wasn't much point in discussing the issue. The song then says that Patty gave birth to a baby boy.

Certain lines in the verses and the chorus suggest that the message is to follow your dreams no matter who says you can't.
