You Never Know is the fourth song on Dave Matthews Band's 2002 album Busted Stuff. It is the only song that had not been performed prior to 2002, and is one of two songs not on The Lillywhite Sessions, the other being Where Are You Going. You Never Know debuted on April 4th, 2002 at the Fleet Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
It is considered one of, if not the best, songs written in the post-Lillywhite era by the band.[citation needed] The song is immensely popular with the fanbase, yet the song is considered a rarity, having been played only 67 times as of March 14, 2008.[1]
The lyrical subject is a return to darker elements that have been mostly absent in post-Lillywhite material.[citation needed] The song deals with the loss of Dave's father to cancer in his childhood.
