According to Loveless: "... When I look back on this particular song, I recall one time this little girl came up to me, and she said, "... you know, the question I have is, ah, if you left the key in the door, and you left the car, then how did you get to your mother's house?" (laughing).. So lyrically, it was an interesting, a very interesting perspective on her part! It's funny to think that people really do pay attention to the words.

It's one of my favorites too. People want to know that they're not the only ones experiencing something or feel some way. Like this song, nobody ever intended to let the relationship die. They just neglected it and it did. No one's at fault, because these things happen, but the hole it leaves inside...you think no one knows how you feel, but they do."

It starts out and you think, "Okay, here's another woman crying about something," and then it swings around and it says he finds her ring on the pillow and he starts to think, "Hey, you didn't know who I was either. There's been a lot of men that this song just tears up."

I've often said that country is the cheapest therapy you can get. Music can be good for your soul. People can be moved to tears....."

"You Don't Even Know Who I Am" was nominated for 1996 Academy of Country Music Song Of The Year award and the 1996 Grammy Awards Song of the Year.

This was the last 45 vinyl single of Patty Loveless music released by Sony/Epic. Of the four single releases from this album, only the first three were released on vinyl, and those only on a limited production run for retail sales. Also, the "When Fallen Angels Fly" album was the last album released on vinyl. Sony/Epic continues however, to produce vinyl records for special projects. The compact disc, introduced to consumers in 1983, had finally replaced the vinyl record after decades as the primary media for recorded music sales.

The song charted for 18 weeks on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart, reaching #5 during the week of 17 June 1995.
