You Bet, California

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You Bet is a small mining town founded in 1858, on the Sierra Nevada Range in California, and bordered by the Yuba and Bear Rivers this town was popular for Western Expansionists. Minerals such as gold were discovered by these "fifty-niners" aka "Pike's Peakers" in search of more metals. Mining in this town brought population and wealth to the West. Among the effects of this late gold/silver strike the U.S. Treasury reduced national debt to levels not seen since.

[edit] History

The name You Bet was given to the town because it was the favorite expression of the local saloon keeper, Lazarus Beard. A post office was established here May 11, 1868 and discontinued October 15, 1903.[1]
