Porygon, Porygon2, and Porygon-Zare among the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion dollar Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. Their main purposes in the games, as with all other Pokémon, are to battle both "wild" Pokémon, which are untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and "tamed" Pokémon that are owned by Pokémon trainers.

Porygon (ポリゴン Porigon?) is the first man-made Pokémon, the product of extensive research by the fictional company Silph Co. It is special among Pokémon in that it consists entirely of programming code. This unique origin gives Porygon many traits and abilities related to computers. Porygon, for example, does not need to breathe, so people are eager to use it in any environment, even ones normally considered inhospitable.
Porygon is also capable of moving freely in cyberspace, which it can enter by converting itself entirely back to program data. The code that makes up Porygon is copy protected in order to prevent its illegal duplication. Otherwise, this code is fairly basic, limiting Porygon to certain pre-programmed motions, actions and reactions.
In the Pokémon world as well as the Pokémon video games, Porygon is only available as a prize of slot machines. As a result, a large number of people have taken to playing the slots seeking to win a Porygon. Porygon owners, however, view them as novelties and prefer showing them off rather than using them in battles against other Pokémon.

From Pokémon Gold and Silver onward, Porygon can evolve into Porygon2 (ポリゴン2 Porigon Tsū?) with the aid of an upgrade. Porygon2 has an appearance similar to that of its pre-evolved form, Porygon, i.e. a bird-shaped red-and blue ornament. Unlike Porygon, Porygon2's design is much smoother, having curved instead of angular surfaces. This may represent the fact that computer and video game graphics are now smoother, not blocky. Porygon2 resembles a toy drinking bird and moves like one in Pokémon Colosseum. Porygon2 also resembles a methanol molecule. The transition from Porygon to Porygon2 also resembles the process of Subdivision in 3D computer graphics.
Porygon2 is supposed to be an improved version of Porygon in every way. It has enhanced abilities, including increased potency in combat. As opposed to other evolved Pokémon forms, however, Porygon2 is shorter and ligher than Porygon. Its artificial intelligence has been developed to such a degree as to give it the capacity to learn on its own from its surroundings and experiences. This results in Porygon2 occasionally exhibiting behavior or motions that were not included in its original programming.
Porygon2 was originally intended to be used as a space probe. Unfortunately, since it cannot fly, such an application has been abandoned. Silph Co. seems to have fixed that problem by Pokémon Diamond and Pearl; Porygon's next model, Porygon-Z, can hover above the ground.

With the aid of yet another upgrade, Porygon2 evolves into Porygon-Z (ポリゴンZ Porigon Zetto?, PorygonZ in original Japanese language versions) from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl onwards. Porygon-Z's appearance is similar to that of Porygon and Porygon2, which were supposedly earlier designs by Silph Co. The programming added to create Porygon-Z was intended to allow it to surpass all other Pokémon; however, as a result, Porygon-Z began to exhibit strange behaviors.
[edit] In the Pokémon video games
Unlike most Pokémon, which reside in the wild, Porygon is artificially created. Because of this, Porygon could not be located and captured in random encounters. Instead, Porygon is one of few Pokémon creatures that needed to be purchased in earlier games in the series.
Porygon is among many Pokémon that undergo evolution. It will evolve into Porygon2 when it is traded to another player while an item called an "Upgrade" is attatched to it. As with most evolving Pokémon, Porygon is statistically weaker than its evolved form. Porygon2 can also evolve when traded to another player. It must carry an item called the "Dubious Disc" in order to evolve into its third form, Porygon-Z. Porygon's evolutionary line is notable in that it is the only evolutionary line that contains two evolutions triggered through trading. Porygon-Z is notable for having the highest Special Attack, one of two statistics that influence the power of an attack, among non-legendary Pokémon. It shares this title with another Pokémon, Alakazam.
Porygon, Porygon2, and Porygon-Z are all Normal-type Pokémon by default. However, the three can learn the moves "Conversion" and "Conversion 2," moves that are exclusive to the Porygon evolutionary line. Both Conversion and Conversion 2 will alter its user's type depending on conditions in battle.
Porygon2 also appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that come out of the Pokéball item. It attacks by charging in the direction it faces, damaging everyone in its path except the player who released it. Then, it will stay still and disappear, notably in a block of pixels. It is also an unlockable trophy.
[edit] In the Pokémon anime
Porygon's only appearance in the entire Anime to date is Dennō Senshi Porygon, an episode most notable for causing hundreds of children to have epileptic seizures on its broadcast in Japan. Japan's Fire Defense Agency reported 685 affected people were admitted into hospitals of 30 prefectures by the following day. The phenomenon was repeated when a news broadcast about the event inexplicably replayed the scene.
It was subsequently determined that the very quickly alternating red and blue patterns of the scene in question triggered a previously undiagnosed (in Japan) form of epilepsy. This light was not caused by the episode's featured Porygon, but rather from a blast created when Pikachu destroys a pair of missiles. As it turned out, the American Federal Communications Commission, and equivalent agencies in most European countries, already knew that television used in this manner could sometimes invoke epilepsy, and had banned extremely high frequency color switching on television broadcasts in their countries years ago.
No new Pokémon episodes were aired in Japan for four months after this incident. The episode has never been aired again in Japan and there are no plans for a dubbed version to be aired internationally.
Aside from a few minor cameo appearances, Porygon has not appeared in the anime since the incident. Neither Porygon2 nor Porygon-Z have appeared in the anime at all.
[edit] In other media
Porygon and its evolutions have made numerous appearances in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
