[edit] Asuma Sarutobi
Template:Infobox Naruto character Asuma Sarutobi (猿飛アスマ Sarutobi Asuma?) is the Jonin leader of Team 10
[edit] Background
Asuma was born as the son the Third Hokage, and in later years would become the uncle of Konohamaru. He at some point in time had a falling out with his father and left Konoha to pursue his personal interests. During his absence he became one of the 12 Guard Ninjas of Fire who protected the Land of Fire's daimyo, indicated by the sash on his waist. Prior to returning to Konoha to resume active military duty, he accumulated a bounty of 35 million ryō, something he seems to be particularly proud of.
[edit] Personality
Asuma is typically a laid-back individual, a doesn't get himself involved in things unless necessary, as seen when he decides not to help save Hinata Hyuga during the Chunin Exams. He is often seen smoking a cigarette, and smokes about two packs of cigarettes a day. Despite this, he will break habit when something is bothering him, such as when the Third Hokage died. He'll also stop smoking if "something is going on", as seen prior to his last encounter with Akatsuki.
Asuma has a very close relationship with his team, even though he believes it to consist of a "glutton" (Choji), a "loud mouth" (Ino), and a "slacker" (Shikamaru). To help them overcome their underachieving natures, he attempts to use bribery and outright trickery to manipulate them into doing what he wants. This is seen most with Choji, who Asuma is frequently able to entice into action with the promise of food. Of his teammates, Shikamaru seems to spend the most time with Asuma and the two play Shogi in their free time, though Asuma has never been able to beat Shikamaru.
It is heavily hinted that Asuma is romantically involved with Kurenai Yuhi. The two appear together in most of their scenes, and the other characters make it a point to note this fact on several occasions. When Kakashi Hatake finds the two together at a dumpling shop, Kakashi asks if they are on a date, to which Asuma responds by quickly changing the subject. In a flashback, Asuma is shown buying flowers for a person he refuses to name, though Ino asks that he say hello to Kurenai for her anyway. During Asuma's battle with Akatsuki, Kurenai is often shown wondering about his progress and eventual fate. When she learns of his death, she falls to her knees in remorse, and later lays flowers on his grave during his funeral. The truth of their relationship is made clear in Part II when it is revealed that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma's child.
[edit] Abilities
Asuma uses trench knives (brass knuckles with a blade on one end, similar to kerambit) to fight. With his Flying Swallow (飛燕 Hien?), he can extend the blades with his chakra to injure an enemy several feet out of the physical blade's range. When demonstrating his wind-based chakra for Naruto Uzumaki, Asuma explains that these chakra-covered blades (when utilized by someone with wind-based chakra) possess enough power to pierce through rock. During the invasion of Konoha, Asuma is able to use these blades in unison with his taijutsu abilities to single-handedly defeat nine Sound ninja without being hit once.
In addition to his blades, Asuma can use Fire Release: Ash Product Burning (火遁・灰積焼 Katon: Haisekishō?) to breathe out a cloud of superheated ash capable of causing third-degree burns. Because it is ash and not flame, the attack remains in the air around the target, and therefore remains potent for a longer period of time.
[edit] Death
Asuma is mobilized as a member of the Niju Shotai to defeat the Akatsuki members that have entered the Land of Fire. Once the two are found, Asuma is forced into battle with Hidan. By consuming some of Asuma's blood, Hidan is able to "link" with Asuma, causing any damage done to him to be transferred to Asuma as well. Because Hidan is immortal, Asuma is the only one actually affected by this. With Asuma unwilling to attack Hidan due to the damage that will be done to him, Hidan begins stabbing himself to bring Asuma pain, eventually aiming for his heart. Shikamaru, who is teamed with Asuma, is able to stop Hidan in time and break the link, allowing Asuma to decapitate him without worry.
Despite this effort, Hidan survives. His partner, Kakuzu, reattaches his head to his body and deals with Asuma's team while Hidan finishes Asuma. After reacquiring the link Hidan stabs himself in the stomach, fatally wounding Asuma. Choji and Ino arrive as backup, forcing the Akatsuki members to flee. Knowing he can't make it back to Konoha in time to be healed, Asuma gives his young students some parting words and dies after smoking one last cigarette.
When Shikamaru is later exacting revenge upon Hidan for killing Asuma, Asuma appears before Shikamaru and congratulates him for finally defeating the immortal. After entrusting his "will of fire" to Shikamaru, Asuma disappears in a puff of cigarette smoke just before his student finishes off Hidan with a huge explosion.
[edit] Choji Akimichi
Template:Infobox Naruto character Choji Akimichi (秋道チョウジ Akimichi Chōji?) is a member of the Akimichi clan. "Choji" means "butterfly (Cho-)" and "the second son (-ji)" added together. Butterflies are insects known to eat sweets. Choji also manifests butterfly wings made of chakra after eating the red pepper pill during his fight against Jirobo. The names "Ino", "Shika" and "Cho" are also a pun on the "Ino-Shika-Cho" winning combination in Hanafuda.
[edit] Background
Choji Akimichi is a loyal and kind-hearted member of Asuma Sarutobi's Team 10, consisting of himself, Shikamaru Nara, and Ino Yamanaka who proves himself throughout the series to be a good friend and genuinely nice person. Asuma describes Choji as a kind hearted boy who thinks about his friends, and therefore, may be a stronger ninja than anyone else. Choji, Shikamaru and Ino call themselves the "Ino-Shika-Cho Trio", just like their fathers before them.
Choji is easily motivated by the prospect of food and becomes highly agitated when somebody calls him fat (he refers to himself as "big boned", "chubby", or "pleasingly plump"). However, he does not hide his love for food, wearing the kanji for "eat" on his shirt. His nigh-constant hunger is also a constant annoyance for his teammates, as sating himself often comes before other necessities such as stealth and teamwork. However, said hunger is not purposeless. Choji's fat is indeed no less than a valuable reserve of chakra that he uses in serious situations. Choji's favorite foods are Korean barbeque, snacks and sweets, though he enjoys anything that is edible just as well. His favorite hobby is buying snacks and his favorite phrase is "Meat".
Choji makes his Part II debut sporting a red headband, red top with armor on his torso, arms, and upper legs and hair similar to his father. On the front of his chest armor is the obligatory kanji for "food". His hair has grown longer, and he now looks less obese and more muscular, just like what he himself always claimed: big-boned. Like most of the Rookie Nine, he has reached the Chunin rank. Choji has also improved his skills during the timeskip, and is now able to enlarge various parts of his body without much concentration. His reaction time has also increased, being able to immediately prevent an attack by Sai from harming Shikamaru or Naruto.
[edit] Choji and Shikamaru
Choji has a longstanding friendship with Shikamaru Nara. The two have complete trust in each other, with Shikamaru being one of the few people to look past Choji's athletic deficiencies and see that he was good-hearted and recognized Choji's true strength. Because of this, Choji has unconditional faith in Shikamaru and, if necessary, would give his life for him.
When Choji was younger, he was often put down for not being good at a game called "Ninja", which appears to be a cross between tag and hide and seek, often using shuriken made out of cardboard. His peers were always berating him; telling him that any team that he is on is bound to lose. One day they simply refuse to let him play at all. However, Shikamaru sticks up for him saying that the teams would be uneven if Choji doesn't join them. This gives Choji a little hope, although in the end they still refuse to let him play.
Choji and his father are later seen talking on the roof of a building, the former still upset over the way he was treated by the other children. His father tells him that one day he will meet someone that he can get along with and that eventually they will be the best of friends. Soon after, Shikamaru walks up the stairs and Choji recognizes him as the one who had defended him earlier. He asks Shikamaru why he isn't playing the game, to which Shikamaru responds that it was too troublesome. He then tells Choji that he likes to come up there to watch the clouds, and that Choji happens to be sitting in his spot. Choji moves over to give him room and Shikamaru proceeds to lie down, who tells Choji that he should watch the clouds with him. This delights Choji and he eagerly asks Shikamaru if he wants to eat some snacks that he has brought. Shikamaru takes him up on the offer, causing Choji to be overjoyed since someone is being so nice to him. From that day forth, the two become the best of friends.
[edit] Abilities
As a member of the Akimichi clan, Choji's fighting style revolves around enlarging portions of his body using ninjutsu and following up with taijutsu.
The most basic of these techniques is the Multi-Size Technique (倍化の術 Baika no Jutsu?, Viz "The Art of Expansion", English TV "Expansion Jutsu"). This jutsu converts food energy to chakra, then channels it into Choji's stomach to expand his abdomen into a ball. Choji follows this up with Human Bullet Tank (肉弾戦車 Nikudan Sensha?, Viz "Human Juggernaut", English TV "Human Boulder Jutsu"). Using chakra to propel himself, Choji tucks his limbs and head into his inflated body and rolls at a high velocity to crush his opponent. Choji can also use a more devastating version of Human Bullet Tank called the Spiked Human Bullet Tank (肉弾針戦車 Nikudan Hari Sensha?, English Games "Human Needle Boulder"). This version involves Choji placing strings with kunai around his body, increasing the speed and power of the attack. After the timeskip, Choji is able to perform this technique without kunai via lengthening and hardening his hair into spikes, much like a porcupine. In Part II, Choji has also demonstrated use of the Mega Palm Thrust (超张手 Chou Harite?), a technique used after the Multi-Size Technique that funnels chakra into his hands, causing extensive damage to the target thrust beneath his palms.
Choji is also capable of performing more advanced variants of the Multi-Size Technique. The first of these is the Partial Multi-Size Technique (部分倍化の術 Bubun Baika no Jutsu?, English Games "Partial Expansion Jutsu"). This works on a similar principle to the Multi-Size Technique, but it allows Choji to expand any part of his body. This jutsu requires significant concentration to enlarge a limb, but after the timeskip, Choji is able to perform this instantaneously. The second of these techniques is the Super Multi-Size Technique (超倍化の術 Chō Baika no Jutsu?), which enlarges Choji until he is the size of a giant, easily enabling him to crush his opponent.
The Akimichi family can consume a special brand of chakra-enhancing pills when in dire situations: the Three Colored Pills (三色の丸薬 Sanshoku no Ganyaku?). The pills, colored green (spinach), yellow (curry), and red (pepper), give the user increasingly large boosts of chakra at the cost of health. After consuming the red pill, which alone is supposed to be fatal for the user, Choji's physical appearance changes dramatically; his fat completely converts into chakra, causing him to become incredibly slim. This increases his strength a hundredfold, in addition to sprouting a pair of butterfly-shaped wings made of pure chakra. This allows Choji to perform Butterfly Bullet Bombing (蝶弾爆撃 Chōdan Bakugeki?), a technique that concentrates chakra into Choji's fist for powerful punch.
[edit] Shikamaru Nara
Template:Infobox Naruto character Shikamaru Nara (奈良シカマル Nara Shikamaru?) is a member of the Nara clan. "Shika" means deer (鹿), and "-maru" (丸) means "round", "circle", or "well-developed", but is commonly used as a suffix in boys' names. The names "Ino", "Shika" and "Cho" are also a pun on the "Ino-Shika-Cho" winning combination in Hanafuda.
His surname, Nara, is taken from the Nara Prefecture in Japan, and Nara ko-en (Nara Park), a park famous for deer whose antlers are used for medicines. Coincidentally, Nara Animation is also one of the production companies behind the Naruto anime. Nara was also the era when Buddhism was introduced to Japan. The Buddhist monasteries founded in the Nara Prefecture took the deer as their symbolic protector, and made hunting deer illegal in the prefecture. "Nara" also refers to maple, which is the plant associated with the shika card in Hanafuda.
In Shonen Jump's character popularity polls, Shikamaru has been in the Top 10 since the third poll and is usually in the 4th or 5th place. In the most recent poll, however, he was placed 10th. He is the only character on his team to make it to the top 10.
[edit] Background
Shikamaru Nara is a lazy member of Asuma Sarutobi's Team 10, consisting of himself, Choji Akimichi, and Ino Yamanaka. Because their fathers were teamed together in the past, Shikamaru is on good terms with Choji and Ino, and as such the three work very well together. Of his teammates, Shikamaru is closest with Choji, who repays Shikamaru's confidence in him with unyielding loyalty to Shikamaru. This is because when they were younger Shikamaru always helped Choji out and stuck with him. Shikamaru's favorite foods are mackerel and kelp, with his least favorite being boiled eggs. His favorite phrases are "live each day quietly" and "life is serene".
Being an extremely unenthusiastic person, Shikamaru lives his life avoiding work. In his free time, Shikamaru typically takes naps, watches clouds, and plays thinking games such as Shogi and Go. When put into a situation where he potentially needs to put effort into something, he attempts to try to find a way to avoid it such as by forfeiting a battle or by pretending to be preoccupied with something else. In the instances where he can't avoid these situations, Shikamaru tends to remark "how troublesome" (めんどくせぇ mendokusē?, English TV "what a drag"). He is fully aware of this side of his personality, and even dubs himself "the number one at running away" or "the number one coward".
Despite his lazy attitude, Shikamaru is quick to act when duty calls or his teammates are in danger. Using his Shadow Imitation Technique and its many variants, Shikamaru often plays the part of stalling enemies so that his comrades can get to safety or to simply buy time. Although this role puts him in a dangerous position once he can no longer stall the opponent, Shikamaru is more than willing to serve it, feeling that sacrificing his life to ensure the safety of his friends is worth it.
While Shikamaru is frequently put into situations that would call for his self-sacrifice, his genius and his exemplary strategic skills have thus far allowed him to escape these dangerous encounters relatively unscathed. Asuma, suspicious that Shikamaru was always able to beat him at Shogi and Go despite receiving abysmal grades at the Academy, disguised an IQ test as a series of puzzles to see how smart Shikamaru really was. In doing so, Asuma found Shikamaru to have an IQ of over 200, and learned that Shikamaru's poor grades were a result of him finding the lifting of a pencil to be too troublesome. When using this trait in battle, Shikamaru puts his fingers together to create a circle and closes his eyes so that he can concentrate. While in this pose, Shikamaru considers every element that is relevant to the situation at hand and analyzes the information to its fullest. Once finished, Shikamaru is able to plan out a battle ten moves in advance and can devise over a hundred strategies to use against the opponent.
One of Shikamaru's more distinctive characteristics is that he finds all women to be bossy and "troublesome". This viewpoint seems to be largely due to his mother's tyrannical personality, though also seems to be influenced by his father's identical view of women. Of the women he has met, Shikamaru finds his mother, his teammate Ino, and the Sand ninja Temari to be the most troublesome women he knows. Despite his opinions on women, he has expressed a notably mature interest in marriage and raising a family, his goal in life being to, "Marry someone who is not too ugly and not too beautiful. Have two children, a girl, and then a boy. Retire after my daughter is married, and my son becomes a successful ninja and spend the rest of my life playing Shogi or Go. A nice, carefree retirement. Then die of old age, before my wife."
Shikamaru is the only of the main characters to be promoted to Chunin-level before the time skip. As such, he is often assigned to lead missions or carry out other leaderly duties immediately before and during the filler arcs. His first mission, to lead a squad to retrieve the runaway Sasuke Uchiha, ends in tragic failure; all members of his team are heavily injured and two are near death. Shikamaru dwells on this fact for a while, but later decides to continue leading missions. He resolves that as long as he leads the missions, he can protect them from death and promises never to put his team in danger again.
Over the timeskip, Shikamaru has changed very little, the only real difference being that he has gotten noticeably taller. He has also begun to wear ear studs instead of earrings, a gift to him from Asuma. During the Chunin Exams at the start of Part II, Shikamaru serves as one of the exam's proctors. Shikamaru's abilities with his shadow have also improved.
[edit] Shikamaru and Asuma
Over the course of the series, Shikamaru had formed a close bond with his Jonin leader, Asuma Sarutobi. The two are often seen playing Shogi together or simply conversing even if the rest of Team 10 is not there. Asuma recognized Shikamaru's potential even through his abysmal grades and was the first to realize Shikamaru's incredible IQ.
This bond is heavily emphasized in the Hidan and Kakuzu arc. Shikamaru is forced to watch helplessly as his beloved sensei dies at Hidan's hands. To this, Shikamaru takes up use of Asuma's trench knives and sets out to get revenge, ignoring Konohagakure's regulations at first. As he ends his fight with Hidan, Shikamaru sees an apparition of Asuma congratulating him. Shikamaru notably ends that battle by setting off explosive tags with Asuma's last cigarette. In death, Asuma's final lesson still drives Shikamaru: the ninja is a pawn to protect the king, and that king is not the Kage, but the next generation.
[edit] Abilities
Coming from the Nara clan, Shikamaru specializes in shadow-themed ninjutsu. The first and most basic of these techniques is the Shadow Imitation Technique (影真似の術 Kagemane no Jutsu?, Viz "Shadow Possession Technique", English TV "Ninja Art: Shadow Possession Jutsu"). The Shadow Imitation technique enables the user to control their shadow and combine it with their opponent, who is subsequently forced to mimic the movements of the user. Even partially conscious or unconscious targets can be made to mimic the user's movements. This jutsu is extremely versatile, as the user can split their shadow to catch multiple targets, and extend and stretch their shadow, with the total surface area being the limit it can stretch, although it can go farther through combining with other shadows. The opponent can break free of this jutsu, but it requires enormous strength on the target's part for this to succeed.
Shikamaru can also use the Shadow Neck Bind Technique (影首縛りの術 Kage Kubi Shibari no Jutsu?, English TV Shadow Strangle Jutsu) after the opponent has been caught in the Shadow Imitation Technique. This jutsu sends a shadow of a hand up the target's body to their neck, choking them to death. This jutsu can also bind the limbs of opponents to further restrict exceptionally powerful opponents that can still move even when caught by the Shadow Imitation Technique.
Shikamaru has developed a variation on the Shadow Imitation Technique after the timeskip, known as Shadow Sewing (影縫い Kage Nui?). This jutsu allows tendrils of shadow to emerge from Shikamaru's shadow, leaving the ground. These tendrils can be used as stabbing weapons, throwing implements, or a rope for binding opponents. Shadow Sewing can be used simultaneously with the Shadow Imitation Technique, splitting the user's shadow. The Shadow Summoning Technique (影寄せの術 Kageyose no Jutsu?) works on the same principle as Shadow Sewing, except that after the opponent is bound with the Shadow Imitation Technique, this jutsu produces tendrils from the opponent's body.
After Asuma's death, Shikamaru uses his chakra-absorbing trench knives. Shikamaru is able to use the Shuriken Shadow Imitation Technique (影真手裏似の術 Kagemane Shuriken no Jutsu?) via channeling his chakra into Asuma's weapons. The knives can then be thrown at the opponent's shadow, paralyzing the target, at which point Shikamaru can cast his shadow and perform the Shadow Imitation Technique.
[edit] Ino Yamanaka
Template:Infobox Naruto character Ino Yamanaka (山中いの Yamanaka Ino?) is a member of the Yamanaka clan The name "Yamanaka" means "deep in the mountain" and "Ino" means "boar" (explaining why Sakura calls Ino a pig or "porker" to insult her). The names "Ino", "Shika" and "Cho" are also a pun on the "Ino-Shika-Cho" winning combination in Hanafuda.
[edit] Background
During her years in the Academy Ino met Sakura Haruno, a girl whose sensitivity about her large forehead got her picked on by others. Ino befriended her by giving her a ribbon that could accent her face and show others that her forehead didn't bother her. With Ino's friendship, Sakura came to develop her own identity and self-worth. As Sakura's confidence in herself grew, she developed a crush on Sasuke Uchiha, who Ino also had a crush on. When Sakura found out about this, she ended their friendship so that the two could properly compete for Sasuke's affection, beginning a bitter rivalry between the two. The two maintain this rivalry until the end of their match in the Chunin Exam, after which they begin to rekindle their friendship. Nevertheless, the two maintain a competitive relationship and constantly attempt to outdo the other.
[edit] Personality
At first glance, Ino seems to be rather egocentric, apparently disliking Choji for his size and Shikamaru for his lack of motivation. She also seems to think highly of her appearance, as seen during the Chunin Exams when she attempts to seduce Neji Hyuga yet finds little success. While the latter trait may be factual, Ino in actuality cares very deeply for others' well-beings and maintains a strong bond with her teammates. Through their bond as the second generation of the Ino-Shika-Cho Trio, the three all wear the same type of earring: a small silver hoop. Her caring side also shows itself during the Chunin Exams, where she forces her team into battle in order to save Sakura Haruno.
As a member of the Yamanaka clan, Ino works in her family's flower shop and has become particularly talented in ikebana. The anime's Konoha 11 arc shows that she has been able to find other uses for her time in the flower shop, and can tell a person's profession by simply looking at the condition of their hands. The anime has also shown that Ino, like Sakura, has developed her own inner-self named "Inner Ino".
[edit] Abilities
Ino's membership in the Yamanaka clan has also led to her specialization in mind-altering jutsu. With the Mind Body Switch Technique, Ino can transfer to another's body and start using it as her own for a short period of time. While this is the most common of the jutsu that she uses, she has yet to have great success when using it; when transferring to Kin Tsuchi's body in an attempt to force her team to surrender, Kin's teammates simply attack Ino in Kin's body instead. During her fight with Sakura Haruno, Ino is able to transfer to Sakura's mind but is repelled by Inner Sakura before she can force her to forfeit. In Part II, Ino is able to use this ability on a hawk, and flies into the air to perform reconnaissance. In the anime, Ino also learns the Mind Body Disturbance Technique, which she can use to force opponents to fight each other while still remaining in her own body.
The anime expands upon Ino's abilities more than the manga; she develops the New Approaching Technique (Shin-dashin no Jutsu?) to engulf a target in a puff of smoke and drag them to the user's location. The anime also addresses her learning of medical jutsu, as the manga leaves it unexplained. In the Konoha 11 arc, Ino watches Sakura use medical jutsu to reconstruct a body, though Ino can't bring herself to watch the process. During the final filler arc, however, Ino finds herself unable to be of use for her teammates and becomes envious of Sakura's ability to heal others. As such, Ino becomes Tsunade's second apprentice in learning medical jutsu, hoping to be more useful to her friends. While she can't heal fatal injuries, she is at least capable of healing minor wounds. Like most of the Konoha Genin, Ino becomes a Chunin over the timeskip.
