Yossi Melman is an Israeli writer and journalist. Receiving his B.A. from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he was also a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. Melman is currently an intelligence correspondent with Haaretz. Melman has stated that he considers himself a left-wing Israeli, and that Israel must abandon the occupied territories to live in peace with a Palestinian state. However, he has also said that the Palestinians should not be given the right of return, as that would defeat the idea of a two state solution in Israeli minds.[1]

In an Interview [2] concerning Iran and its martial nuclear program in one of the most subscribed Austrian newspapers, he responded to the question whether he views the gas deal with the Austrian OMV and Iran critically as follows: "Melman: Whilst I understand the Austrian dilemma regarding energy interests: The gas deal of the OMV should have been postponed, or at least negotiated. Austria should have been much more adamant and should have demanded concessions. Overall, they are far too yielding towards Iran - one only has to remind himself of the female Swiss president who ran around in Teheran with a hijab. The signal is: We respect you, but we don't even expect that you respect us as well. Austria should follow the German example: Germany is the best ally of Israel [3], better than the USA, since the German support is not tied to interests.

Original: "Obwohl ich das österreichische Dilemma bei den Energieinteressen verstehe: Der Gas-Deal der OMV hätte verschoben oder zumindest anders verhandelt werden sollen. Österreich hätte etwas dafür verlangen müssen, Konzessionen. Man hätte viel härter sein müssen. Überhaupt sind wir dem Iran gegenüber viel zu nachgiebig – man denke nur an die Schweizer Präsidentin, die in Teheran mit dem Kopftuch herumläuft. Das Signal ist: Wir respektieren euch, aber erwarten nicht einmal, dass ihr uns auch respektiert. Österreich sollte dem deutschen Beispiel folgen: Deutschland ist der beste Alliierte Israels, besser als die USA, weil an die deutsche Unterstützung für Israel keine Interessen geknüpft sind."
