Yoshimitsu (吉光 Yoshimitsu, meaning 'good luck, shine bright' ?) is a fictional character originally created for the Tekken series of fighting games, designed by Namco. Yoshimitsu made his first appearance in Tekken, and he has returned for all subsequent sequels to that game since his inception. Additionally, an analogous character bearing the same name, weapon, clan and basic information, was later carried over into Namco's Soul Series of fighting games as a secret character, making his debut in Soulcalibur and returning for Soulcalibur II and Soulcalibur III. It can also be noted that he looks different in every game he is in, although his 'Player 2' costumes in the Tekken series are generally similar. He can also be customized with items to look like his Tekken 3 costume in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, he also sports the kanji "宇" (romaji: u, pinyin: yǔ) which means "void". Yoshimitsu is one of only four Tekken characters (the others being Heihachi Mishima, Nina Williams and Paul Phoenix ) to have appeared in every game in the series.

[edit] History

[edit] Tekken

He entered the first tournament as a decoy, so that Kunimitsu and the other members of the Dura-Anti Manji clan would be able to steal the tournament's funds unobserved. But eventually, he heard of a powerful sumo wrestler, called Ganryu engaging in fraud and other corrupt activity, who had likewise entered the tournament. This base disrespect for the sumo code infuriated Yoshimitsu. Then, the Manji clan stole his fortune and distributed it among the poor. Sometime later, angered by Kunimitsu's insistence that the clan merge with the Mishima Zaibatsu, as well as her attempts to steal the clan's sacred tachi, he expelled her from the clan and found that, strangely, she had gone to Kazuya Mishima for aid. Suspicious of what she might have been plotting, Yoshimitsu and the clan broke into the Mishima Headquarters, and Yoshimitsu's arm was lost during the raid. While there, he came across Doctor Boskonovitch, who saw the injured Manji ninja and helped him escape, later replacing his lost arm with a bio-mechanical prosthetic.

[edit] Tekken 2

In Tekken 2, Yoshimitsu learned that Doctor Boskonovitch had been kidnapped by the Mishima Zaibatsu, and he entered the second tournament so that he could free the doctor from the evil corporation's grasp. At the same time, Kunimitsu had also entered the tournament to steal the clan's tachi and assume the role of leader of the Manji ninjas once and for all. However, Yoshimitsu claimed victory. Shortly thereafter, news from the clan reached him that Doctor Boskonovitch was going to be flown by helicopter to a secret island observatory. He quickly dropped out of the tournament and escaped with the doctor.

[edit] Tekken 3

Boskonovitch created the Cold Sleep machine during experiments in his search for eternal life. The technology, still unproven, was used to preserve his young daughter who suddenly passed away.

Yoshimitsu raises research funds and as the leader of the "Manji" party he helps the poor and disadvantaged. Yoshimitsu visited Boskonovitch when he learned of the many martial artist disappearances. Yoshimitsu was surprised to find Boskonovitch suffering from a mysterious pathological organism. It's believed to have been contracted during lab experiments while making the Cold Sleep machine. Like some weird sci-fi story, Boskonovich claims he needs blood from the God of Fighting to complete his research and bring his daughter back to life. Indebted to Boskonovitch for saving his life, Yoshimitsu enters the tournament to help an old friend.

[edit] Tekken 4

As the leader of the Manji Party, Yoshimitsu dedicated himself to providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to the ever-increasing number of political refugees around the world. Unfortunately, with a constant lack of necessary funding and manpower, Yoshimitsu was unsure about the future of his organization.

When Yoshimitsu heard about The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, he envisioned a union between the Manji Party and the Mishima Zaibatsu. With this dream in mind, Yoshimitsu decides to enter the Tournament immediately. He must defeat Heihachi Mishima at any cost...

[edit] Tekken 5

Yoshimitsu, head of the Manji Clan, plans to use money from winning the tournament to help the starving people of the world.

At the end of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, Yoshimitsu broke into the Mishima Zaibatsu vaults and stole the money for his own. During this operation, Yoshimitsu notices the fallen Bryan Fury and takes him to Dr. Boskonovitch.

One month later an S.O.S. goes out from Dr. Boskonovitch's research facility. Yoshimitsu rushes to the facility and finds everything in ruins and many members of the Manji Clan slaughtered. Yoshimitsu finds the defeated Dr. Boskonovitch in the deepest section of the research laboratories and learns it was Bryan, with his newly implanted perpetual power generator, that was responsible for the carnage.

"He destroyed those who helped him... I'll never forgive him". Yoshimitsu's fist shakes with anger.

When Yoshimitsu hears that Bryan has entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5, he signs up as well, seeking revenge on behalf of his dead Manji Clan members.

[edit] Tekken 6

Trying to avenge his fallen Manji clan comrades in Tekken 6, Yoshimitsu realizes that his sword, a cursed blade, is weakening. By killing evil doers and villains the sword would retain its power, otherwise the cursed sword will make the user go insane. Yoshimitsu realizes that he can no longer use his old sword and decides to use another blade that seals the properties of the cursed sword. He then decides to enter The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.

[edit] Other appearances

Yoshimitsu and references to him have appeared in other Namco games. His Tekken 3 incarnation is a bonus character available in Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis for the PlayStation. Furthermore, Yoshimitsu's Tekken 3 "energy sword" is one of the secret tennis racquets unlocked during the game. In the Tekken spin-off Game Death by Degrees, Yoshimitsu's sword is an available weapon. He also had brief cameos in Tekken: The Movie as a competitor in the tournament. The first leader of Manji Clan is also named Yoshimitsu and appears as a selectable character in Soulcalibur, Soulcalibur II, Soulcalibur III and Soulcalibur IV

[edit] Weapons

Yoshimitsu's sword was originally depicted as a standard katana, and continues to be in Namco's artwork. However, from Tekken 3 onward, it has the appearance of a lightsaber (although in some Tekkens like Tekken 4 the other costume has a normal katana). In Kunimitsu's Tekken 2 story, it is revealed that the blade is passed down through the Manji party's leaders. The previous leader is ritually sacrificed, and the blade absorbs their power and skill.

[edit] Fighting Style

Yoshimitsu uses a lot of fast, poking attacks, like his flying knee (fubuki) and his numerous spinning attacks. Performing too many of these spinning attacks, though, leave him dizzy. Yoshimitsu utilizes numerous unblockable moves with his sword, as well as a lot of unconventional moves and stances. Including a 'Pogo' stance in which he is perched on his sword, a 'Hover' stance wherein he spin his sword like a helicopter blade an he hovers in mid-air, and a backturned and sitting stance where he can recover life points and teleport. Some of his moves damage himself as well. Yoshimitsu also has an unblockable attack called the Sword Stab. It does around 90 damage, but can possibly be a one-hit K.O. if the enemy is charging Yoshimitsu and gets hit. This move is not on the in-game move list.
