[edit] First Capital

I added a paragraph early on describing York's claim to be the first capital. Whether or not one believes it should be considered the first capital of the US, the idea is very ingrained in the community and deserves to be explored in the wiki article. I put in links to proper places, and I think it fits in well in the history section. It could possibly deserve its own section, perhaps "York's claim to be the first capital" or something. [edit] Street Rods

I added something about the Street Rod festival. Anyone who's been in York on that weekend in June knows that shuld be included. Does anyone have a picture of the parade downtown to add to the reference? TimBilly1224 01:22, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notable Residents

We have a somewhat eclectic mix of notable residents listed in the article; a more complete version is in Category:People from York, Pennsylvania as linked. Does anyone want to take a look at who should be included and who should not, to see if the York, Pennsylvania article needs a more comprehensive listing? (Ardievu 18:27, 19 August 2006 (UTC))

On this subject... I might remove the "Notable Residents" section totally and just keep a link somewhere on the page to this Category:People from York, Pennsylvania. I dont personally think it adds anything to the article being there, plus "Notable Residents" is a mis-representation, as 2 of the people listed are dead, and the band Live now lives elsewhere... If I remove the section I will place the link somewhere nicer, unless someone has a reason for it to stay.--Azslande 22:11, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I am fine with removing this, but why not link it to List of people from York, Pennsylvania (although that needs a lot of work)? Ruhrfisch 22:40, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I assume you mean linking the category at the bottom of the page which is what I did. If you are talking about something else let me know and I will see what I can do.--Azslande 23:21, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Ohh I see what you are saying. There is a category at the bottom of the page that has pretty much the same information in it. Do you think that the page you linked and the category should be combined into a single page, that way there isent two list of people from or close to York floating around Wikipedia.--Azslande 23:25, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
The category is automatically generated by putting the Category:People from York, Pennsylvania tag on an article, but it can't be edited. The article List of people from York, Pennsylvania can be edited (so it could have the names wikilinked and a brief description, birth and death years, etc. after each name). Strictly speaking, the York, Pennsylvania article should not be in the catergory (since it is not a person). Instead there should be a wikilink to the List of... article in the York, PA article. I will try to do this next. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch 00:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good to me, I have been editing Wikipedia for a while but I have never really gotten deeply into it, and its always nice to learn how things work. York is my hometown and I am really looking to improve the article over all, and its nice to have people with ideas and help along the way.--Azslande 01:00, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] First Capital/Firetrucks

I think its worth noting that York, Pennsylvania still list itself as the first capital of the United States. Its everywhere in the city, infact, its on the symbols on York City firetrucks. I can obtain a picture if you like, I see firetrucks quite often, its plastered all over them "First Capital of the United States". I think more information about the "First Capital" debate should be listed. I know that York City schools still teach that York was the first Capital, but other schools outside dont.--Azslande 20:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC) (Born, Raised, & Live in, York, Pa)

[edit] York Race Riots of 1969

I'd like to see a section of this page, or an entire new page that covers the York Race Riots of 1969. There is a link from this page to another site, but I have to judge the neutrality of that page. I don't really know anything about the race riots other than the current events with the former mayor of York, but I would imagine that this is an imporant part in the history of the city.

After looking over this for a while, and thinking about it, I agree, and I might start working on a section for the 69 race riots... While I was not born yet, I will try and find any information about it and do a nice section... USA Today did a big article on it some time ago that should help a lot.--Azslande 03:01, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I agree. How can there be an article about York without mentioning the York race riots of 1969? There should be a LOT devoted to that. If you don't start working on it, then maybe I will. That's a glaring omission in this article; the reader would think (as I did) that the writer(s) was trying to tip-toe around the subject because he's embarrassed about this having happened in his hometown. This isn't supposed to be a public relations piece; it's supposed to be written in the impartial style of an encyclopedia. The absence of a large reference to the '69 race riots in this article is more noticable to the reader(s) than what is in the article. Or........ maybe the York race riots should have an article of its own. Any opinions on that idea? Duprees62 04:27, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes please, if someone could contribute that this would be great. My mother grew up in York and remembers the race riots quite vividly. I was kind of surprised not to see any mention of that here.4.79.244.196 20:00, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Photis

[edit] Media

The paragraph in the Media section pertaining to The Bluebird Songs is not of general interest pertaining to York, PA and should be deleted. 68.63.151.173 23:25, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Agreed, and done. --Adavidb 03:41, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Improving Article

Well... I am looking to improve this article as much as I can, maybe find sources and things like that. I would like to possibly reorganize the page, possibly reword some of the sections to make it read smoother and nicer over all. My big question is... Is there a set of guidelines or a guide for wikifing a page for a city, such as this one. If there is a guide for it, or rules, or anything like that, could someone please point me in that direction. Also I was thinking of making this into some type of project incase others would like to help, could someone also point me in that direction as well. Any comments or suggestions would always be very welcomed.--Azslande 01:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities and Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania. I would also look at WP:FA for guidlelines on how to improve articles and look at the featured articles on cities there for ideas. I put a welcome on your talk page which has more useful information. You could also submit the article to peer review for suggestions on improvement. Hope this helps. Ruhrfisch 01:40, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

PS I made the changes in the York article and List of people from York article.

Thanks for the help, and also, thanks for taking care of that article.--Azslande 01:05, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The map of PA is misaligned

The PA locator map doesn't show the whole state--OK, maybe it doesn't have to, though I think it should--but then, when you click on it to enlarge it, the spot where York is is cropped off the map. That should be fixed--you should be able to see York on the map of PA on the York page when you click on the map of PA. I would fix it myself but I'm inexperienced and I don't know how to edit maps. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.107.98.202 (talk) 01:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

  • I assume you mean the map in the infobox at top right - when you click on it is it this file: Image:Pennsylvania Locator Map with US.PNG? It shows up fine on my computer. Can you provide any more infomation please? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:51, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
    • Yes, that's the map I mean. OK, when you look at the page, the map shows the state of PA with a little red dot for York. When you click on the map to get a closer look, the dot is gone. I may have been mistaken before, and thought that the relevant area of the state was cropped out of the map on the closer view, as now that I look again, I see that the entire state is in fact shown. It's just the dot for York that is not shown on the close-up view. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.251.70.93 (talk) 17:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
The red dot feature is provided by the Infobox Settlement template's "pushpin map" function, which overlays a particular state map image with a dot at the latitude and longitude coordinates of the city. The dot doesn't appear when the state map is viewed by itself because the city coordinates are no longer available at that point, since the template no longer controls what is displayed.—Adavidb 04:23, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
