Yong Peng

Yong Peng (永平) is a town located in the southern of Johor state, Malaysia. It has an area of 1911.6 hectares with an estimated population of 29,046 *[1]. Yong Peng has two main interchanges on North-South Expressway including north to Kuala Lumpur and south to Johor Bahru.
The local residents are mainly of Chinese origin migrated from the southern China in the 1900s. There is also a small number of Malay and Indian population residing in the outer area of Yong Peng. The main language is Mandarin with Johor accent. Majority of the people work as rubber tappers or farmers.
Due to its strong agricultural economy, most of the younger generation chooses to leave Yong Peng after completing secondary education and work in the factories of the neighbor country, Singapore.

The river of Yong Peng (Jalan Besar) was the beginning place when the first generation of the Chinese migrants came to stay. Most of the Chinese have entered the fourth generation as of today. It is a town that was invaded by the Japanese in the World War II, many Chinese were killed by the Japanese. After the World War II, the British came back to power, Yong Peng experienced another dark period by the chaos created by the Communist Party of Malaya. The British hired African soldiers to kill many innocent Chinese who were suspected to have supplied food to the Communist. Yong Peng was also disturbed by the racial riot (mostly taking place in Kuala Lumpur) during the 13th of May event in 1969. Today, the young generation grows up in a friendly neighbour and a safe environment.

It is administered by the Yong Peng District Council (Majlis Daerah Yong Peng (MDYP)) (formerly known as East Batu Pahat District Council (Majlis Daerah Batu Pahat Timur (MDBPT)) ). The district council was established on 1 September 1979.

Primary School - One Chinese and two Malay (Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Bertam and Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Yong Peng); both are run by the State Government.
Secondary School - One Chinese Independent school (Yong Peng High School); and two Government schools (SMK Yong Peng & SMK Dato' Seth).

Yong Peng has many HockChew/Fuzhou Chinese restaurants. Yong Peng is famous for its HockChew fried noodles, Red Rice Wine Chicken and HockChew Cake, not to forget the Yong Peng noodle with duck.
It is also famous for malay small food stalls (warung). One famous place is near the wet market, where people usually go for breakfast. It is famous for its nasi lemak, lontong and mee goreng which is a malay local dish.
