[edit] Not for deletion, re: MfD

Apparently, for reasons unclear to me, there's a suggestion to delete the Yitzhak Gruenbaum page—though perhaps that pertained only to its previous form as solely a redirect? The subject is certainly notable, and I've begun translating the page from the Hebrew Wikipedia and shall expand from other academic sources. The page had already been speedily deleted one minute before I saw the notice on my talk page.[1] I just recreated it – without the tag marking it as a target of a "speedy delete". I don't think there is a risk of a re-occurrence, so I've removed the {{hangon}} tag.  --Lambiam^Talk 21:07, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spelling of surname

I based the spelling of Gruenbaum's surname for the page name according to his entry in two notable English-language sources: the Encyclopaedia Judaica and the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust. I've found no equivalent justification for an anglicized spelling (i.e. "Greenbaum"), nor references for a polonized "Grynbojm" nor a Yiddish transliteration (per YIVO) "Grinboim." Otherwise, I note that the page in the Hebrew Wikipedia is spelled as in Yiddish, the mother tongue of Polish Jewry, whose surnames in Latin alphabetic transcription, as evidenced in the Pinkas ha-Kehillot compendium published by Yad Vashem, were fairly equally divided between the germanic (i.e. "Gruenbaum," as rendered in typography lacking the umlaut) and the Polish. That form, to the best of my knowledge, is a transliteration from the Yiddish. I don't doubt its use, but advise against it as a page name here for the sake of consistency with published academic/encyclopedic sources. -- Deborahjay 21:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
