Yilan City

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yilan City (traditional Chinese: 宜蘭市; pinyin: Yílán Shì; Wade-Giles: I2-lan2 Shih4; Taiwanese POJ: Gî-lân-chhī), commonly and historically spelled Ilan or I-lan, is the capital of Yilan County, Taiwan. It is on the north side of Lanyang River. The first Han Chinese settled there in 1802.

The Lanyang Plain, in which the city is located, was once known as the Kapsulan (蛤仔難/甲子蘭) Plain or the Komalan (噶瑪蘭) Plain. These names, as well as that of Yilan itself, are derived from the Kavalan tribe of Taiwanese aborigines.
