Yester Parish Church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yester Parish Church is a church in the village of East Lothian, parish of Yester, East Lothian, Scotland. It is part of the Church of Scotland, and is a linked charge which combines the parishes of Bolton & Saltoun, and Humbie.
The church lies in the centre of the village, at one end of the main street.
The parish has seen several church buildings over the years. A church once stood at Duncanlaw, a former settlement to the south-east of the main village, and the ruin of another small church still stands in the woods near Yester House, the south-west of the village. The church in use today was built in 1708, and is typically (for the area) T-shaped.
Inside, the two main aisles of the church both face each other (north and south, respectively), with the original oak pulpit against the west wall.
There are three galleries, one of which - the Tweeddale Gallery - was used exclusively by the Hay family as the "Laird's Loft". This gallery is reached by a separate external door, which leads not only to the gallery, but also to a small anteroom with the remains of a fireplace.
