Yervandashat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yervandashat is a city founded by King Orontes (Eruand) IV, the last of the Orontid dynasty as a new capital to replace Armavir which, according to Armenia’s “Father of History” Movses Kagankatvatsi, had been left dry by a shift of the Arax river. In addition to remains of fortifications, brief archaeological researches in the 1980s reportedly revealed traces of the ancient gardens and palaces attested by Movses. In the 360s AD, Yervandashat was destroyed by the army of the Persian King Shapuh B. Near today's Village, traces of the walls, streets, and build- ings of the once-capital city have been preserved.[1]
