The Yeongdong Expressway is a freeway in South Korea. Numbered 50, it connects the Seoul area with Gangwon Province. It is named from Yeongdong, an old name for Gangwon. The road has its western end in Namdong-gu of Incheon Metropolitan City. Its eastern end lies in Gangneung near the east coast. From Incheon to Gangneung, the expressway covers 234.39 kilometers. Much of the expressway is four lanes wide, though a two-lane portion of the expressway near Yongin has become a notorious bottleneck.

[edit] History
The initial 101.1 km section of Yeongdong Expressway, between Singal and Saemal, opened on December 1, 1971. It was extended by 91.5 km east to Gangneung on October 4, 1975. On November 29, 1991, it was extended west by 23.2 km, from Singal to Ansan. Since then, various widenings have taken place, and 8-10 lanes are planned to open between Singal and Hobeop in 2009.
