Yengema is the second largest city in Kono District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone . Like most towns in the Eastern province of the country, the major industry in Yengema is diamond mining. The town population has been estimated at 35,948 now.[citation needed]. The town is home to the main airport that serves the Kono District. The population of Yengema consist mainly of the Kono and Mandingo ethnic groups. The majority of the population in the town are muslim, Christians are present though, mainly among the Kono ethnic group.
Yengema was the centre of heavy fighting between the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and the Government forces during the Sierra Leone civil war due to the rich diamond reserves in the area. The Yengema Airport, which is the largest and main airport that serves the Kono District is located in the town.

The population of Yengema consist mainly of the Kono and Mandingo ethnic groups. The majority of the population in the town are muslim, Christians are present though, mainly among the Kono and the Sierra Leonean-Lebanese community. Yengema has schools, a hospital, and an airport.[1]

Like the rest of the country, football is the most popular sport in the town of Yengema. The town does not have a major football club; however, the Diamond Stars of Kono represent Yengema and the rest of the Kono District in the Sierra Leone National Premier League, the top football league in the country.
