From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yem is one of the 79 woredas in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. Because Yem is not part of any Zone in the SNNPR, it is considered a Special woreda. Yem is bordered on the west by the Oromia Region, and separated from Gurage on the northeast and Hadiya on the east by the Omo River. The administrative center of Yem is Fofa.

Yem is named for the Yem, or Janjero, people whose homeland lies in this special woreda (see Kingdom of Janjero).

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 91,784, of which 45,815 were males and 45,969 were females; 1,929 or 2.1% of its population are urban dwellers. With an estimated area of 666.25 square kilometers, Yem has an estimated population density of 137.76 people per square kilometer.[1]
