Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mostly referred to only as the Menuhin Competition, the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists was founded by Yehudi Menuhin in Folkestone, Kent/England in 1983. The competition is the world’s leading international violin competition for young players under the age of 22. Over the last 25 years the competition has attracted the most talented young violinists from around the world. Many of the participants and prize-winners have gone on to become some of today’s most exciting violinists. Among them are Tasmin Little, Nikolaj Znaider, Ilya Gringolts, Julia Fischer, Daishin Kashimoto and Lara St. John.

The Menuhin Competition is much more than just a competitive event for highly talented international young musicians. Each competition is a festival of education, music and cultural exchange; forming a deep bond with the communities that have played host to the event. All competitors are invited to stay throughout the entire event, most of them accommodated with local host families. To date the competition has been hosted in Folkestone/UK, Boulogne-sur-Mer/France and at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

In addition to the actual competition rounds, the Menuhin Competition also offers a series of concerts, master classes and outreach events, attracting large numbers of local, national and international audiences of all ages.

The Menuhin Competition is the only event of its kind that asks its jury members to perform a concert themselves. With highly acclaimed musicians on the international jury panel, those events have been a great success. Past and present jury members include: Maxim Vengerov, Kyoko Takezawa, Bruno Canino, Raphael Wallfisch, Igor Oistrakh, Olivier Charlier and Miriam Fried.

The current competition is scheduled to take place in Cardiff in Wales in the United Kingdom from 11 to 20 April 2008. It is organised in partnership with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of Glamorgan. As of April 17, 2008, both Junior and Senior sections are in the finalist portion of the competition, with the final round scheduled to take place on the 18th for Junior section and 19th for Senior section.
