The palatalizing property of Ye is different from the pronunciation of Englisch yes. The letter Ye is pronounced [je] in Russian as in English yes only when it is not following a consonant that has a palatal variant, such as at the beginning of a word. Palatalization occurs only when the preceding consonant has a palatal variant, such as [n], that is transformed into[{{IPA|nʲ]], a sound similar to <ni> in the Englich word onion.
