Giannis Goumas (Greek: Γιάννης Γκούμας) was born on 24 May 1975 in the village of Ambelonas, near Larisa. He is one of the many players to emerge from Panathinaikos FC's youth academy and has been in their first team since 1994 . He was recently handed the captain's armband for his club and is known for his tough tackling, excellent aerial ability and his habit of scoring goals off set pieces. He has been a regular member of the Greece national football team since making his debut in February 1999 against Finland. He was in the Greece team during the UEFA Euro 2004 Championship but did not take part in the team's victory.
