Yang Wei (simplified Chinese: 杨威, pinyin: Yáng Wēi, born February 8, 1980 in Xiantao) is a male gymnast from China.

[edit] Background

He earned a silver in the 2000 Summer Olympics Individual All-Around, as well as a gold medal with his team. In 2003, he won the gold medal with his team and silver medal in the All-Around Competition at the 2003 World Championship.

At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, his world championship winning team finished fifth after a spate of falls. In the all around, Yang was ahead after Paul Hamm's infamous fall on vault. After Hamm's failure, Yang would likely have won the gold medal had he not fallen during his high bar routine, and the Paul Hamm/Yang Tae Young controversy would never have arisen.

However, Yang returned to form at the 2006 World Championships, by winning gold with his team and in the individual men's All-Around and parallel bars. He also won gold medal in the team event, individual men's All-Around, rings and parallel bars at the 2006 Asian Games.

Yang's girlfriend is fellow Olympic gymnast Yun Yang.
