[edit] Personal and business life

Yang was born in Beijing to a father who was an English professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University and a mother who was an engineer. After she married Hong Kong entrepreneur Wu Zheng, she became co-owner with him of a new media company, Sun Television Cybernetworks.[1]. She also became one of China's richest business people, according to Forbes Magazine.[2] Before her marriage, however, Ms. Yang was one of China's most well-known television hostesses.

Yang holds a Masters Degree from Columbia University, after having attended the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

[edit] Comparison to Oprah Winfrey

Yang is the creator of the hugely popular internet website for woman, Her Village. With her celebrity, media empire and popularity among women, Yang has often been compared with Oprah Winfrey. She has been called "China's Oprah Winfrey,"[1] although others would disagree, calling Oprah "America's Yang Lan," and proposing tongue-in-cheek that Yang, in fact, will become bigger than Ms. Winfrey on a global scale.[3]
