Yan Yan was a loyal general of the Kingdom of Shu during the Three Kingdoms era of China. Yan Yan began his career, however, as a general serving under the minor warlord Liu Zhang.
According to the historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yan Yan was captured by Zhang Fei in 212 after being defeated when Zhang Fei invaded the area of Chengdu (成都); but Yan Yan refused to submit to Zhang. Zhang was impressed with Yan's bravery and honoured him as a faithful subject of Liu Zhang. Eventually, Zhang Fei was able to persuade Yan Yan to join Zhang's lord and friend Liu Bei (刘备). Eventually, Liu Bei conquered Chengdu and made the capital of his kingdom there. Thus, Yan Yan became a full-time general for Shu.
Yan Yan is not to be confused with Wei Yan(魏延), another military general of Shu.
