The Yamaha XTZ 750 SuperTénéré (Tenere) is an Enduro-type motorcycle from Yamaha. It is a larger, two-cylinder version of the one-cylinder Yamaha XTZ 660 Ténéré. Both supersede the smaller, air-cooled Yamaha XT 600Z Ténéré. First sold in 1989 it used the new Yamaha design of 5 valve heads. Model discontinued in 1996, but not before the Dakar version YZE750 won the Dakar race twice in 750 size and 4 times as an 850. Owners/riders love the machine for its comfort and solid feel plus the long range fuel tank (26 litres)
Like its predecessors, the SuperTénéré was designed for the desert in Niger. The equivalent Yamaha TDM models are more suited to roads. The XTZ 750 is considered very reliable and requires minimal maintenance. A solid protective guard around the engine prevents damage to it. 100,000km run achievements are not uncommon, assuming appropriate maintenance. Only regular problems are with regulator/rectifier and frame breakages on those bikes used for jumping etc
The front brake disks of the XTZ are provided with plastic covers. For normal road use these covers are beneficial, but they make cooling of the brake disks more difficult when driving downhill. Many owners therefore remove them, in order to prevent glazing of the brake linings.
There are frequent rumours of a "modern day" Supertenere from Yamaha but nothing solid to report at April 2008.
