From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, Yahoo, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for your contributions, and I hope you'll like the place enough to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

You can sign your name and the current date on talk pages and votes by typing in four tildes (~~~~). If you have any questions at all, you can have a look at the help pages, put up a question at the village pump, or ask me on my talk page. Welcome to Wikipedia, and happy editing! - ulayiti (talk) 11:38, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Redirecting

Hi, I was actually going to help you out on that, but User:Sjakkalle got there before me. You can make a redirect out of a page by replacing its content with #redirect page to be linked to, for example:

#redirect Muslims in Ukraine

Hope this helps. - ulayiti (talk) 11:48, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image markup

Hi! When putting images into articles, you should usually put them there as thumbnails that link to the full-size image. You can do this by typing . The size of the thumbnail can be adjusted by inserting the width inside the brackets after another | sign, and it's usually good to include a caption as well (this can be done after another sign). I've formatted the image at Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu according to this format, as:

This is the format you usually should follow when adding images to articles. For further details, you could have a look at Wikipedia:Extended image syntax, and please remember that copyrighted images are not allowed on Wikipedia!

By the way, when adding comments to talk pages (such as mine), you should always include a signature to show people who has made the comment. This can be done by writing in four tildes (~~~~) at the end of the comment, and the server will automatically change it into your username and the current date. [edit] Cricketer photos

Hello Yahoo,

I notice you've uploaded several pictures of cricketers. Thank you for trying to make the articles better. But you didn't give any information about where you got the images from. Unfortunately, you can't just take photos from other web sites and include them here. We're only allowed to use photos if we have permission of the person who took the photo. I wish this weren't the case, but it's the law. Wikipedia is likely to get sued if we include professional photographs.

[edit] Pet Shop Boys

I don't really know anything about the topic, but there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two versions (5 September and current), just that the contents are organised differently. I don't have any preferences one way or the other (except that the table in the current version looks a bit better than the list in the old one). But I'd just like to let you know that you don't have to be an admin to revert a page to an earlier version - see Wikipedia:Revert for instructions as to how you can do it. And please remember to sign all comments on talk pages by typing in four tildes (~~~~). - ulayiti (talk) 08:54, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Chorus 09.jpg

Hi Yahoo,

In early September of 2005, you uploaded Image:Chorus 09.jpg without source or license information. If you don't provide this information by 24 November, the image will be reclassified as a candidate for deletion.

Please understand that although uploading unidentified images may seem to embellish articles in the short term, such submissions ultimately add to the burden of Wikipedians obligated to remove copyright violations from the encyclopedia. If you area able to cite the sources of your images and prove that the usage is legal, please do so; otherwise, it's better not to upload them at all. Thank you for your understanding. – Ringbang 18:32, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] "by Naeem Qasai"

I've noticed that you've uploaded several photos to articles with the text "by Naeem Qasai" in the caption. Please don't put your own name in the caption. If you didn't create the photo with your own camera, then putting your name there is misleading; if you did create the photo with your own camera, then putting your own name on it generally isn't useful unless you're important enough to have your own article in Wikipedia. (Which very few of us are, alas!) You can put details of your authorship on the image page itself, but please, not in the article. - Brian Kendig 15:41, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually, let me elaborate a little on this, because you need to take some action here. I see you've been uploading a lot of images to Wikipedia articles, and that's great - but it appears these are copyrighted images that you're uploading to Wikipedia without the permission of the original copyright holders, and then you're saying in the image summary that the copyright holder has released all rights. Your heart's in the right place, but this really isn't good for Wikipedia. For every image you've uploaded, if you got it from a copyrighted web site, then you need to mark it as copyrighted and remove it from the article which uses it, and then I can delete the copyrighted images for you. Let me know if I can provide any additional info or help. - Brian Kendig 16:10, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Jonathanking.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jonathanking.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use article name or fairuse. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Agnte 15:24, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting tips

Hi, and welcome! I'd like to point out a couple of things you may find handy. You can make numbered lists automatically using #, like this:

 1. first item
 2. something else
 3. blah blah blah

and also, when writing short articles about albums, it'd be helpful if you add album-stub at the bottom. Cheers, Lupin|talk|popups 02:43, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Here's a separate style tip: please insert spaces after periods (.) and commas (,). Sentences without spaces after them look weird.Like this. It's not common English style. Thanks in advance. --Russ Blau (talk) 14:28, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 0% for major edits and 33% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 3 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 14:31, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Zelimkhan.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Zelimkhan.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 14:58, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Ottomar.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ottomar.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Arabesque-full.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Arabesque-full.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:34, 22 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 11:34, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Magicsoundcover.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Magicsoundcover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Moiz Hussain

I have nominated Moiz Hussain, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Moiz Hussain. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Rasul Makasharipov.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Rasul Makasharipov.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Polly (Parrot) 01:14, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Cusco2.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Cusco2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 13:45, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Loraine kelly.JPG

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Loraine kelly.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? mattbr 17:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
