From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Yacob Hailemariam is a retired professor of business law at Norfolk State University; former Senior Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda; and an elected member of the Ethiopian parliament.

In 2004 he put his career on hold to travel to his homeland of Ethiopia to run as a candidate for parliament in his home district. He was duly elected in the 2005 general election but was subsequently arrested in a government crackdown on the Coalition for Unity and Democracy political party, following electoral disputes. He has been held in Kaliti prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia since October 31, 2005. Along with other CUD figures he was released in September 2007 after accepting a pardon from the Federal government.
