This user appealed on the unblock-en-l mailing list (since you don't have a valid email, they went there). I can send you a copy of what has been said, mail me via my talk page link. I am of a mind to allow the user another chance if they commit to not keep recreating this same article over and over... would like to discuss with you first though. ++Lar: t/c 13:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vakıflı

That was discussed on the suggestions page. Some people may not have the Turkish characters on their computers and will thus see something like Vak?fl?, which looks really unproffessional especially on the main page. It certainly cannot be avoided in the article itself, but I agree with Smurrayinchester and Free smyrnan, who found it to be better idea to only use Latin letters in the DYK hook.--Carabinieri 22:44, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

BTW, I'm sorry I simply reverted your edit with the rollback button, I guess I should've left an edit summary explaining the revert.--Carabinieri 15:18, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Soldier Front

I'm just wondering why you deleted the Soldier Front article. On the deletion talk page it was about half and half and in the extentsion it was about 3 to 1 for keeping it and 2 or 3 comments on it. The article followed most standards and was still being edited. I don't see the justification in deleting it. If you could reply that would be great because I worked alot on that page to get it up to standards and I really don't understand why it was deleted.
Thanks, Socerhed 15:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] David Hicks and spelling changes

Hi, NYC JD. The rules about spelling variants are here. I point you in particular to the following highlighted sentence: If there is a strong tie to a specific region/dialect, use that dialect. I adopted that principle because David Hicks is an Australian. We don’t spell "defence" as "defense" over here. The only concession we make is where "defense" is part of a formal title, such as the US Department of Defense. I therefore left that one alone, but changed all the references to his "defense team" etc to the Australian usage. I think this is perfectly legitimate for an article about an Australian. I’m sorry you thought this was rude. There was certainly no intention on my part to be rude. I hope you can understand where I’m coming from. Cheers. (Btw, it looks like you've been around Wikipedia for about a week; I've been a Wikipedian for over 3 years. I say in all sincerity that maybe you ought to check out the rules in future before contacting others about their apparent errors. All the best.) JackofOz 11:20, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] YeLLeY511

I note you blocked User:YeLLeY511 as a "spam-only account", and the block log states that the user is "apparently a paid promoter for a wrestler". What leads you to believe that she is a paid promoter rather than a fan? It is true she uploaded many images, but she hasn't "spammed" them on Wikipedia; they were for use in the Brimstone (wrestler) article. —Psychonaut 17:42, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

The purported email from the wrestler that s/he pasted to dozen of image talk pages leads me to believe that this person is a promoter for the wrestler. Whether s/he is paid is not material. - NYC JD (make a motion) 17:44, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
A lot of fans (especially ones who are new to Wikipedia) tend to use promotional language when writing articles on their favourite subjects. I gave YeLLeY511 the benefit of the doubt and simply tagged her article as needing cleanup. I'm sorry you didn't extend to her the same courtesy. —Psychonaut 17:50, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
She has emailed me asking for an unblock, which I have declined. Feel free to grant it if you can justify it. All I see is a spam-only account. - NYC JD (make a motion) 17:57, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm not an administrator so I can't directly effect an unblock. I think more opinions would be helpful, so I have solicited them at WP:ANI#Review block of YeLLeY511. —Psychonaut 18:16, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Oli Sykes

Hi, I noticed you closed the deletion debate about Oli Sykes. I am not contesting this, however, I just wish to know a few things.
Firstly, why are people saying it is self-promotion, when I created it, and am not Oli?
Secondly, why are bigoraphic articles such as Matt Heafy still standing, when they could be delted for the same reasons, as they are unreferenced? They are both notable people!
I would appreciate it if you could explain these things, as it may help me in the future.
Many Thanks, Asics talk Editor review! 17:11, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Although I see some pages such as Matt Heafy are unreferenced, I think it would last through a deletion debate, simply because of the number of Trivium fans, so I will not nominate that! Is there a way for me to have see the article before deletion so I can have it on a user sub-page? Asics talk Editor review! 17:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
If you look on my Userpage I have Oli sykes on there, I was going to change the link to User:Asics/Oliver Sykes, so it's there in case I find references and other such information that would mean it is a good enough article in a year or so! But really I just want it there for show! :-D Asics talk Editor review! 17:23, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough, although the article Job for a Cowboy was left on a userpage until it was of sufficient quality to be moved to the mainspace and it would be far easier to alter from here rather than starting from scratch Asics talk Editor review! 17:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Can't wait to hear this

NYC JD, Why did you remove the Speedy Delete tag that I put on Image:Ejaculationexample001.jpg. Did you deem it a scientific display? Is it such an encyclopedic example that it must be kept? Let me guess. "Wikipedia is not Censored", "there is no consensus to remove it", "any action must be discussed on the talk page", blah blah blah, I've already heard that. Can you tell me something new? If you can't, then I will. At the Sexology and Sexuality articles of the english Wikipedia, the lunatics are running the asylum. If you think that this image is scientific, encyclopedic, and would pass the Miller Test in a United States court of law, then hold still, let me get your Straight jacket. Infofreak 15:13, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I have absolutely no clue whether the image should be deleted or not. But I do think you should follow the process designed for it - NYC JD (make a motion) 15:03, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
and what is that?

Infofreak 15:08, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

So you mean to tell me that you can't Speedy Delete an image? Infofreak 15:11, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I could under one of the criteria outlined in WP:CSD. You ask an administrator to delete, I came along and obviously declined to do so. Enough of this. Go list it at IFD and have a proper discussion. - NYC JD (make a motion) 15:13, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm not clear on why you deleted this image. It was never listed on WP:IFD. It was used in no articles for a few minutes, but I think it should probably be added back to Richard Kyanka. However, I don't know where it came from, don't have a copy on my own computer, and most importantly, I don't know how (if) it was licensed for use on Wikipedia. [edit] Help for a newbie getting lost in wikipedia and first article entry.

Hello, I've used this site as ref for a while now. However I have only recently joined then created an article on the Guild that I am a member of 'British Film Designers Guild'. I'm having a spot of bother getting your requirements right. Mainly verification citing and notability. I've added various sources and have authority to use the logo, plus referenced the importance of the Guild's role to British Cinema, training organisations and even working with the UK government. Have I done enough to warrant an entry? We are the UK smaller brother of your big USA Art Directors Guild organisation which has quite a presence here on wiki training.

You have so many help pages I'm getting a little swamped by info and I'm not much of a surfer and programmer to start with.

Many thanks(Kodystanton 12:59, 9 March 2007 (UTC))

Would you mind re-looking the article over? It's been re-done and a lot of things have been sourced, words have been made more generic, and it's been copyedited by several editors. Also if you have any specific objections I'll be glad to address them. Quadzilla99 09:58, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu article

Hi! I'm sparring with you on the Shark Island Challenge article but I need your help elsewhere. There is a user who is constantly reverting edits to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu article stating unsourced claims (the article itself has already lots of unsourced claims :-) about its origin. Its consensus among editors that BJJ came from Judo when Mitsuyo Maeda teach it to the Gracies in Brazil. I've provided sources for that in the talk page and also tried to contact the user User:DrParkes on his Talk page but it was of no use. He keep reverting the article every time, on and on again. I don't know how to proceed without asking for protection of the page or blocking of the user. I will refrain from reverting but in doing this the current article is in the state the misbehaving user always wanted. While this page stays like that, this user is "winning" this revert war and forcing his wrong POV on a relatively popular article. As an admin you may have some suggestion towards solving this problem and I am eager to hear them. Regards Loudenvier 17:14, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brazilian_Jiu_Jutsu article

Hello, User 80.58.205.35, who has been consistently working on the same articles as DrParkes and I speculate may be DrParkes, has removed the #REDIRECT from /Brazilian_Jiu_Jutsu (which previously redirected to the main article, Brazilian_Jiu-jitsu, you were involved in semi-protecting) and has replaced it with most of the inaccurate version that DrParkes (and 80.58.205.35) have been forcing on the main article without discussion. I have replaced the redirect for now but expect it to be gone before too long, and I note that this backs up Loudenviers argument that they were in fact performing Sneaky Vandalism - this is an obvious attempt to circumvent the semiprotection of the main article and DrParkes's blocking. Your deletion was unwarranted. Before jumping to conclusions, check the facts first. The person is a pop composer widely known in Russia and the article gived significant number of hints about person's notability. The article itself lists bare facts, a single hype sentence, which can be easily deleted instead of the whoile article surely is not "blatant advertising". `'mikka 18:31, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Very well. Let us continue your education. [edit] Barry Ley and Blaggers

Hi again! I think DrParkes had started autobiographical articles if he is in fact Barry Ley as I suspect, or he is closely related or has a vested interest on Barry Ley and Blaggers. I have tagged those articles. He make irrational claims about notability (the best seller book..., known for his contribution to the world of BJJ..., inventor of one of the only 3 techniques named after a modern practitioner of BJJ...). He is only a BJJ blue belt, and unknown in the BJJ scene. I don't know how to properly deal with these issues. I think AfD would be great but since I have some trouble with DrParkes before, this could look like retaliation (which it isn't, I assure you). I was about to edit his articles to remove unverifiable references and facts but thought it would be better to let it intact so that the article itself would be evidence of its autobiographical nature. [edit] KSM and coercion

I noticed you stated on talk:ITN that you believe KSM's Guantanamo admissions were "almost certainly coerced". That very odd. Have you read the transcript? KSM was very much in control, I thought. - NYC JD (interrogatories) 16:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I do not disagree that the transcript gives the impression that Khalid is in control during the hearing. However, that does not mean the admission was not coerced. Page fourteen of the transcript brings up the point regarding the man's treatment for three years, between 2003 and 2006. Note also that the location of the place where he was held during those three years is [ REDACTED ]. His treatment has human rights violations written all over it. The secret [ REDACTED ] prison and alleged torture are violations of various human rights treaties, including, but limited to, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Art. 5, 9, and potentially 10), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Art. 7, 10), and the United Nations Convention Against Torture. Major news organizations, including, but not limited to, TIME Magazine, have picked up on the confession's dubious reliability. Even if the confession were at his own leisure, there are variety of reasons why someone would want to make such an extensive confession even if were not entirely true. Admitting one had a hand in carrying out 9|11 is enough for the maximum sentence (death? life without parole?). So why not also claim you participated in thirty other attacks; they can't punish you doubly worse, but perhaps it might take the authorities off the scent of the real perpetrators. -- tariqabjotu 21:21, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I am new and made a change to the U.S. Constitution page. The number of amendments to the Constitution have been changed from 32 to the correct 27. Is there a way to remove the edit (changing James Madison) from appearing in the history? Thank you!

[edit] Second Amendment

I'd like to inquire as to the reason that my edit to eliminate POV in the second amendment section was changed. Considering there is ample debate as to the interpretation to the amendment, it would only be factually accurate to sum up the amendment with all points considered. After all, the militia is the first stated and, arguably, the point of most independent emphasis. Aceholiday 15:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

First of all, legal rulings and "interpretations" do not constitute a monopoly on the "factual" interpretation of an issue. I wasn't proving a point, and I'm not going to argue with you. The response to my inquiry as to the edit of my edit was accusatory, inappropriate, and also a complete violation of one of the five pillars of Wikipedia. You can read all about those guidelines at WP:EQ. Judging by that response and your personal page, some humility might serve you some good as well.Aceholiday 16:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Accusatory? Yeah, I thought your edit was in very bad taste. As to my userpage, I think it's rather spartan. What gives you the idea I am insufficiently humilitous?? Hey, the hiding of Table of contents doesn't really because it's a long article and so it's easier to go to the different parts of the article from it. It also doesn't look better because the overview is where the bat and ball looks more acceptable than it be in the result more than half way, because the the real short overview=its a bat and ball game. Also the [edit] "buttons" go down in the text part of the section. [edit] Faye Turney

I notice that you have taken administrative action to delete the article on Faye Turney. Without going into lots of detail, I contend that the article did not meet Wikipedia's deletion criteria and that there was no consensus for this deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Faye Turney. The reason why I am mentioning this here is that it is my understanding that I should discuss the deletion with the actioning administrator before going to Wikipedia:Deletion review. Greenshed 16:50, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Aren't articles at deletion review supposed to get 5 days? Faye Turney only got 2 (or three, if you are being generous), and the reason for closing that you listed was that the arguments of those voting "keep" were no longer valid, now that Faye Turney is back in England. However, I read one "Delete" argument that, as long as Faye is still in Iran, then it is dangerous to keep her article up. That argument is also no longer valid. Wouldn't it be better to let editors decide for themselves how the change of circumstances changes their arguments? There was no reason for a speedy close, even though you only did a redirect. The closing administrator should follow consensus, not make up new reasoning because of new events. Please respond here instead of on my talk page. Enuja 02:22, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
3/30 to 4/5 is more than five days. I have no idea what you're talking about. As to the rest, I already stopped beating my wife. I stand by my decision. - NYC JD (interrogatories) 03:10, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
I figured it out! It was originally "nominated" for deletion on 3/30, but it wasn't "listed" on the AFD page until April 2 [3], so, April 2-5 is three days, not five days. I'm not sure why I thought it was two and a half days, must be my poor arithmetic skills. So, do articles get 5 days after the AFD page was started, or 5 days after the AFD was listed on the main AFD page? It's in an interesting question that I don't know the answer to. I'd missed that particular detail, so now it makes more sense to close the discussion, especially as a redirect. I still think it might have been better to see what the consensus was after the release was a well known fact. Enuja 18:59, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Faye Turney. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article or speedy-deleted it, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Greenshed 16:29, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Inasmuch as I am an unabashed textualist and strict constructionist (to be sure, many of the policy outcomes I prefer are more readily advanced, at least at present, under a looser standard, but I resolve the problem simply by counseling that one need not be bound by the Constitution or the vast majority of laws promulgated thereunder if he has not acceded to the Constitution, which argument, though in its exposition rather pretty, seems, for some reason, unlikely ever to draw widespread favor in the courts), I had to chuckle at your semi-protection of the Fourteenth Amendment article; I imagined Nino Scalia walking to the National Archives and affixing to the Fourteenth (I'm sure RBG would be a vicious wheel-warrer, though). [edit] Faye Turney

Hi,

Strictly speaking, I did it as an editor, and you are free to revert me. Understand, though, that the closure of the AfD is not binding on any consensus at the talk page to undo the redirect. The matter didn't need to come to DRV in the first place, because the choice between redirecting or leaving the article fully available is editorial. Anybody -- with a good reason -- can revert the redirect, subject to talk page consensus. So, if some folks want it redirected, and some don't, you'll need to work that out at the talk page. AfD is a forum for deletion -- any other choice it makes (to merge/redirect, etc.) is subject to regular editorial processes. Best wishes, Xoloz 17:15, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, I don't know what to tell you regarding your disagreement. You're welcome to disagree, but the logic I express (shared also by Rossami at the DRV) is the established way of doing things, at least insofar as Deletion Review is concerned. We've been referring disputes like this to talk pages since at least 2004 (before I even got here). Objectively speaking, redirecting is a subspecies of keep because the history remains open, available, and public. The history is not deleted; reversion continues to be available because that is the shape of our software. Practically speaking, DRV doesn't have the time or the expertise to evaluate whether a redirect continues to be in order. We're confused enough just trying to decide strict deletion/undeletion questions! :) When an admin decides at AfD that the history is pure junk, but a redirect is warranted, he'll usually say, "Delete, then redirect" in the close: this close is a subspecies of delete, because the history goes away from public view.
Speaking of confused, there's my Hebrew... I continue to try! :) Best wishes, Xoloz 18:04, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Anyways, even if it was drug ref, it's not violating any policy, drugs aren't that bad either. I'm addicted to this drug :-). WooyiTalk, Editor review 21:20, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, since you already had a chance to explain at RFCN and did not point out how it was in violation of policy, and you don't seem to be here right now, I am going to just go an unblock the user. Not trying to step on your toes, there is just no reason to block this newcomer. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 21:28, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
Ladies, don't unblock until the RFCN discussion has had time to develop. Then unblock away if warranted. Drug references in username have been judged inappropriate many times in the past. I guess you've forgotten the classics: "Got a fat-ass 'J' / Of some bubonic chronic / That made me choke / Shit, this ain't no joke!" hehe. See also here. I bet the user is evading a block, anyway. Very interesting contribution history. -- Y not? 21:33, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
(ec)RFCN does not decide when we block and unblock, it is a place for discussion. While in the past there was a prohibition on names that referred to illegal activities, there was a talk page consensus that it should be removed, and it was. So while those names may have been in violation in the past, there is not policy based argument for the block today. The block was contrary to the blocking policy, I assume by accident. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 21:38, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
No hard feelings Y, we all make mistakes.Chronic The Wedgehog 21:37, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
I've told ya multiple times that the name is the famous robotic contestant's name "Kronic the Wedgehog", not a drug. Also just FYI, drug use is neither inappropriate nor offensive, check our precedent Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names/Pothead12345. WooyiTalk, Editor review 21:38, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
While I respect your opinion, I find the recreational abuse of drugs at best pointless and at worst destructive. But thanks for your support :-) Chronic The Wedgehog 21:40, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

See just below. This is ridiculous. I am getting bemused emails from friends about this "controversy". Any plans to change your username to "embezzler" or "inject-heroin"? how about "InsuranceFraud"? All perfectly valid, yes? WP:U!! WP:U!! Phooey! -- Y not? 04:38, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
  • HighinBC is correct in that this does not violate our username policy. And neither does "embezzler", and so forth. We even have an admin who calls himself a thief. >Radiant< 10:36, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:U

A quick follow up on a recent block of yours, drug references are absolutely not forbidden in usernames. Please defer from making any further username blocks until you can re-acquaint yourself with WP:U. An acknowledgment of understanding regarding this issue would also be appreciated, your responses to other folks regarding the 'Chronic' block have been less than re-assuring. - CHAIRBOY () 22:03, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

I am familiar with WP:U and its "Promotion of a controversial or potentially inflammatory point of view" clause. Our goal here is to build an encyclopedia good enough to be cited by scholars and judges. Do we really want users with usernames such as "Chronic the Wedgehog" or "crunkb" help us reach that goal? What about the notion that the spirit and the letter of the username policy forbids references to criminal and/or drug activities is so controversial? -- Y not? 04:24, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Referring to something is a bit different that promoting a point of view. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 04:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Of course it's an endorsement. If WP:U doesn't squarely cover that, let's change it. -- Y not? 04:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Not to be harsh, but Y is also a drug reference (yohimbine, formerly sold on the street as an ED cure as "Y"), I'll facebook you with the interesting stories of a yohimbine overdose I treated when I was a medical student 74.12.80.240 05:45, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
God save me from medically-trained anonymous apparitions! It's 4:13 AM EST - time for my Nexium, I think. -- Y not? 08:14, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
(outdent) Asserting that women be allowed to use computers is considered a controversial or inflammatory view in some conservative religious countries, your example would also rule that out considering that this is an international project. Also, the elitism in "do we really want users with usernames like X and Y helping us reach that goal?" is certainly not in the spirit of the project either. There are plenty of folks here with "silly" usernames, it's part of the culture. If you still believe that WP:U prohibits this type of reference, we can request wider comment on WP:AN or WP:VPP, and I'm afraid you'll find that while not unanimous, there is a consensus at odds with your statement. - CHAIRBOY () 14:26, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Y, to promote something you need to take some sort of position. "Chronic The Wedgehog" is not putting forth any position. Therefor it cannot be promoting anything. If you want to change WP:U, I suggest you start by discussing this change at WT:U. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 14:31, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Y, let's get it straight, drug use is not a bad thing and lots of Wikipedians do it. Get over it and don't complain. WooyiTalk, Editor review 14:51, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Complain? -- Y not? 15:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
More accurately, the idea that drug use is bad is an opinion that does not necessarily enjoy consensus on Wikipedia. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 14:59, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Irrespective of whether drug use is "bad", it is "criminal" in the vast majority of countries, and certainly in the U.S., where the majority of our users come from. That would be at the heart of any proposed change, which would not be drug-specific. -- Y not? 15:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps so, but the current policies do not support your decision to block that user based on username, and that's the issue here. If you'd like to change it so that names that reference drug terms aren't allowed, you're welcome to, but that isn't currently the case. - CHAIRBOY () 15:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
This is a completely academic debate, but I maintain that reasonable people can disagree about the application of the "Promotion of a controversial or potentially inflammatory point of view" clause to these usernames. -- Y not? 16:22, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
It's not just academic to me - you banned me out of process for no good reason. If you think you own ideas or values superseed Wikipedia policies, then you should resign your Adminship. BTW, some sort of apology would be nice. Chronic The Wedgehog 20:42, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
No apology, Chronic. You were never banned - you were just forced to choose another username. -- Y not? 23:50, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Our community consensus makes rules, and rules do not prohibit username with reference to illegal activities. And also, drug use is not always criminal, use of my drug of choice isn't illegal at all, man. WooyiTalk, Editor review 21:57, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
While the application of the "Promotion of a controversial or potentially inflammatory point of view" may be subject to different points of view, a name would first need to take some sort of position to promote something. neither of these names claims anything. You will see in the policy that some things you cannot refer to(such as violence), but other things are forbidden to promote. Key distinction.
Regarding and change to the WP:U policy to prohibit illegal stuff, this rule existed and was removed after a consensus to do so was found on the talk page. The main issue is that laws vary from country to country, even kite flying is illegal in some places. HighInBC(Need help? Ask me) 14:06, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I don't understand your closure - it was 15 Delete (counting me, the nom) to 10 Keep. How does that equal a "Keep" closure? Can you please point me at the guideline you are following? Thanks --Justanother 02:40, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I wasn't counting. Delete votes were less than impressive. Experienced users came down heavily on the keep. There seem to be some partisan shenanigans involved, so I closed it no consensus again. -- Y not? 02:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
You are right about the "partisan shenanigans" - The anti-Scientology clique counted for 6 of the 10 keep votes. The pro-Scientology clique counted for 3 of the 15 Delete votes. If you remove the clear partisan aspects it goes 12 to 4 for Delete. Personally, I think you should discount the known partisan votes of regular edit-warriors in the Scientology-series articles and go with the non-involved and close it Delete. Of course, I am the nom and a Scientologist to boot but I think we have a clear preponderance of non-involved editors coming down on Delete. --Justanother 03:01, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ngo Dinh Diem

You blocked me for 48 hours for making 5 reverts to the article on Ngo Dinh Diem. I believe that block was unjustified. Wikipedia instructs persons in my position to seek dispute resolution. The dispute resolution page says to first talk to the parties. So here I am.

I believe the block was unjustified for two reasons. First, I made no reversions after being warned by an administrator named Nishkid64 (more of him later). Second, my reversions were made to reversions to my text by a "gang of three" users, Sarvagnya, Blnguyen and Nishkid64. Hi Y, I got your message on my talk page, regarding the Tura Satana photo. If you look at the file history, under "licensing" it reads: "I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain. This applies worldwide. In case this is not legally possible, I grant any entity the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law." I looked into this a bit before adding it to my page, and I think it should be fine, but let me know if you think I'm mistaken. All best, --G-Dett 18:10, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

But if it's a movie screenshot, then I need to remove it right? If that's right, then don't bother relabeling it – I'll just take it down. I don't have any further information than the licensing. I see what you're saying. I thought perhaps Russ Meyer – a bit of a renegade DIY guy – might have been the one to release it. He never seemed to have a problem with copyright – Faster Pussycat, Mudhoney, Supervixen etc. Just let me know what I should do.--G-Dett 18:19, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MuslimMatters.org

As someone who can speak on behalf of MuslimMatters.org (I am part of the editorial board), I am grieved at your misrepresented and misinformed claims about MuslimMatters.org. You stated:

Finally, I was disturbed to read the following exhortation on the linked-to MuslimMatters site, ***which was probably responsible for some of the SPAs that flooded this AfD: ***

And may I ask on what basis do you state that? At any point, did MuslimMatters post a statement on the blog to 'flood' this AfD? This is pure unfounded speculation that merits an apology.

Using Shaalan's death as an opportunity for evangelism is quite unsightly, and weighs heavily against the opinions of the "keep!!" SPAs at this AfD. The outcome of the debate is Delete. -- Y not? 03:23, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

This is another case of speculative discourse. Did you even request clarification of what was meant by this statement? Of course not. It seems that you have chosen to ignore the Islamophobic charges, yet you have yourself dived neatly into what merits that charge. So, let me explain it to you and to other readers, since I am the one who added the comment you refer to. The point of the 'dawah' was to show the average American, who does not share the Muslim faith, who has been exposed to vast Islamophobia, who hardly gets to hear the other side, an opportunity to see a Muslim as a hero; someone who gave up his life to save the life of a person who did not share his faith. That is the dawah I referred to. I am not naive enough to assume that we are close to the point of using the mass communication channels for evangelism; rather, we just want people to consider us as normal, average human beings. If you disagree about the public opinion regarding Muslims, then you are the one in need of serious fact-check. Furthermore, your comment had absolutely NOTHING to do with the reasons for keeping or deleting Waleed's entry. Rather, it had all to do with your own prejudices against Muslims. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Abureem (talkcontribs).

    1. So in essence you're claiming that you instructed your readers to use channels of mass communication to spread message X and not at all message Y?
    2. Are you also suggesting that charges of "islamophobia" should be determinative in the decision whether the article Waleed Shaalan meets or fails our deletion policy and practice?
    3. Any basis for alleging that I have my "own prejudices against Muslims"?
    4. "Public opinion regarding Muslims" had no bearing on the determination of the outcome of the deletion debate.
    5. I am fairly insulted. -- Y not? 20:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

1) I am not sure what you are getting at, but I'll try to answer it anyway. Like any other blog, we are opinion-givers and hopefully opinion-makers. In this case, we asked our readers to get the word out on Waleed's heroism, because it didn't seem to be making as much news as we believe it deserved. To get the word out where? Everywhere. On their blogs, in their emails, etc. What is wrong with propping up someone's heroism? This has nothing to do with Wikipedia, and at NO POINT in any blog entry or comment, did we advise readers to come to Wikipedia and lobby for him. Is that clear now? So, this is direct contradiction to your allegation/insinuation that we somehow 'caused' the flood of 'keep comments'.
2) How and when did I suggest that charges of Islamophobia should be any consideration of anything? I merely pointed out your assertion of ignoring Islamophobia and stating that I could see signs of it in your comments. My "Keep" vote is simply and objectively due to the fact that Waleed's story was highlighted in many media stories and he became somewhat of a hero in Egypt. He is notable and deserves the mention, and he would be notable whether he was a Muslim, Christian or a Jew.
3) My basis lies in how you misconstrued what I stated in my comments regarding dawah.
4) This is a repeat of #2. The only reason I brought up public opinion in my previous comment was to explain the context of my comments on MuslimMatters.org and to refute your allegations.
5) That didn't sound like an apology for your clear misrepresentation of MuslimMatters.org.Abureem 21:00, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

All right, bud. This is going nowhere. The AfD was closed correctly within the meaning of our deletion policy and practice, I stand by my decision, feel free to appeal that if you've got time to waste. Exploiting a man's death to urge the promotion of anything at all related to "public opinion" is... how shall I say it... wrong. The accusation of Islamophobia by AfD voters against the nominator and by you against me are bull. Shabbat shalom. -- Y not? 21:07, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
      • I love the way you conflate things. I am NOT taking issue with you over the deletion. The only reason I even mentioned MY reasons for keeping the entry was because YOU brought it up. What I am taking issue with you over is YOUR insinuations regarding the comment on MuslimMatters.org. And you continue to insist on expressing the same opinion, which has nothing to do with Wikipedia. Don't you get it? Perhaps you need to separate your own biases from your 'objective' work here. And Shalom to you as well. Abureem 21:22, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Whats your problem

You removed the link to the reputable Muslimmatters blog for Waleed Shaalan that has been linked and referred to by People Magazine, by Arabisto.com and others. Yet you left Reference#18, which is to a blog.

It seems that you have something personal going on here. I don't want to bring up your stated religious background but I hope you are not on your own personal religious crusade here. Abureem 15:40, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

References are a bit different than "external links", see WP:EL. If you feel that there reference is not reliable - I don't know if it is or isn't - feel free to remove it as well. -- Y not? 01:39, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi I have recently been tagging a few australian project category pages - and I find your edit summary re fraudster and criminality somewhat enigmatic to say the least - could you please leave a longer explanation on the talk page before you do that something like? thanks. The categoriess have (in the hundreds tagged) some weird and wonderful text usually unsigned - but to have such a change like that - I would say either an acknowledgement of or australian law/culture in relation to the issue like that would be much appreciated. cheers SatuSuro 06:10, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry

I guess that was kind of an asshole move. But I just couldn't help it when I noticed the connection (yes, I am pretty immature). You should be more careful if you really want to keep stuff like that secret. I am sort of confused as to why you switched names actually - I knew you were in some disputes and stuff, but I never thought it got that bad. 67.86.86.217 22:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Wait a minute - if you are "totally out of the closet" (assuming I've correctly applied the metaphor) - then why did you get my edit oversighted? Jeez, you people continue to confuse me with your doublespeak. All the best, I guess. 67.86.86.217 22:44, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
    • I didn't get your edit oversighted - I just deleted it. Those that know me know me. Those that don't know me don't need to know. Just because somebody's gay, doesn't mean it should say that on their talkpage, right? Same here. -- Y not? 23:24, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
    • And who are you, actually? -- Y not? 23:24, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Good call, I should've checked the deletion log. I guess I thought it was harder to remove just one revision than I thought (after all, I was under the impression that was the main argument behind oversight in the first place). I'm not sure I understand the gay analogy - I don't really consider being a closeted homosexual the same sort of thing as having a prior identity - but I'll let you run with it. Personally, I'd be much more concerned with someone hiding his past rather than his sexual preferences. But all things tend to come out in the end, don't they? 67.86.86.217 03:28, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and I am just a person (albeit a young and impolite one) who finds the whole concept of Wikipedia both fascinating and horrifying at the same time. Your change in handle just sparked my interest (and perhaps a little of my sadistic side). Happy editing. 67.86.86.217 03:28, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Why don'tcha register a handle and join the party so we don't have to guess who's who? Too bad about Hughes tonite, eh? I was pulling hard for a no-hitter. I hope you're not a RedSox fan there in CT. I find RedSox fans both fascinating and horrifying... But that's just me. -- Y not? 03:52, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Well I am a Mets fan, so I am neither fascinating nor horrifying...just fucked. But hopefully this year, eh? The reason I don't register a handle is that I would then feel committed to actually contribute something, instead of just dick around on school nights. I created a real username once, but only got to 500 or so edits before getting burnt out (now I just use it to vote once in awhile). There have been some fake ones I've taken the liberty to use to, for instance, time response to various vandalism and test forgiveness afterwards. Like I said, this is quite an interesting place, and it's fun to test out. But I don't have the time (nor the motivation) to really help. Maybe in forty years or so. 67.86.86.217 04:12, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Fine. Oh, and "happy editing" is awful. It's like the state trooper telling you to "drive safely" after he writes you 3 tickets for 8 points. Hate that... -- Y not? 04:39, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Conrad L. Raiford

Thank you for your response. I am his daughter and am also a well-documented journalist. I am trained to be unbiased.

Over the years, there have been numerous articles written about Mr. Raiford. I am in the process of accessing the archives of the Greensboro Daily News and Record. I paid to have the article downloaded. The article I referenced was not only an obit, but a compilation of many articles written by Jim Schlosser about Mr. Raiford. Mr. Raiford was also in the Carolina Peacemaker many times and I am in the process of gathering those referenced materials.

I would think that a man who helped break the color barrier at a then all-white Greensboro Police Department is notable. He was one of only six men recruited. This man also played in the Negro Major Leagues for the Homestead Grays and the New York Cuban Giants.

I will stop editing the article if you would be so kind as to take over or have someone else write it if you feel someone else will do a better job. If you have an e-mail address, I would be delighted to forward news articles to you to reference.

Because of Mr. Raiford's outstanding contribution to human rights, a swimming pool in the Warnersville community of Guilford County bears his name.

Mr. Raiford also represented North Carolina at the Munich Games. Yes, he is notable.

Thank you for your consideration and understanding. I look forward to working with you.

Seeing your response to my speedy deletion tag is an infuriating and inappropriate action on your part. I was in know way trying to "bite" that user with that speedy tag. I am simply warning the user that the article may meet the criteria for speedy deletion. It appears you are a new administrator and have only been active since February of this year. [edit] PaxEquilibrium

If you don't buy the fake death (which seems a bit contradictory, I suppose you meant to say that in your opinion it is a fake death or that you don't buy the death), why don't you simply block that user? If there's sufficient evidence in your opinion to oppose their RfA, there should also be sufficient evidence to block them on the grounds of harming WP. —AldeBaer 01:54, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Lotsa people are harming WP. I can name a dozen off the top of my head. Doesn't mean I ought to run around and block them all. -- Y not? 02:25, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Y not? Seriously though (and PaxEquilibrium aside), if anyone is veritably harming WP, they are usually at least politely warned not to continue that particular behaviour. As a reductio ad absurdum, why wouldn't an admin use the tools to protect the encyclopedia? In yet other words: Are there any special reasons why that dozen isn't warned to "knock it off"? —AldeBaer 06:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Admin/RFA

Hello, thanks for the comment. I've debated about making an RFA, I tried a peer review and things went fairly smoothly; I've tried to learn from the recommendations there (uploading to commons and being better about edit summaries). The only thing that's kept me back is this lingering question of: "will I get too involved?" (I think many web-users ask themselves that); the converse of that thought is, as long as I stay as involved as I am now, I'll likely be okay. So far that thought is winning, thus at this point I would accept a nomination. --Bobak 00:17, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello again, I'm actually leaving the office for the night --I'll be back tomorrow morning around 9am Central Time (US). All the best. --Bobak 00:43, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, I seem to have been surprised by people I tried to go through Mediation with on what's turned into a controversial Mark Sanchez article (see the talk page). I admit I was surprised, and I apologize ahead if my nomination fails and this embarrasses you. I guess I shouldn't have waded into the controversy and passion that surrounds college football. --Bobak 00:15, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Well... looks like things worked out. I must admit that my RfA managed to defy whatever expectations I may have had. Thank you, warmly and sincerely. I am honored to join the ranks of those who've come before me. I'm also starting to feel a little rouge. Good luck with the bar, muah-hah-hah-hah... --Bobak 23:45, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] K.A.D. Camara-ish; User:FearBot

I wonder if I might solicit your opinion with respect to two unrelated issues relative to each of which you are well-wiki-qualified. You will recall that we differed here over whether Camara was necessarily notable as having been the youngest-ever HLS grad (we both, though, supported keeping, and so I'm quite glad to see that a decent article now exists), and I wonder if your views with respect to prospective biographees Angela and Diana Kniazeva, about whom Eugene Volokh wrote here (his claim of fair use on the attendant photo, quite interestingly, is one that we would probably have rejected here even pre-"replacable fair use" deletions), might be similar. (Feel free to excise this part of my message if it inappropriately references any history here.)

I could support a keep on the Kniazevas... I saw Eugene's post before. It depends on how much press they got. -- Y not? 21:44, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Separately, you may well have seen the notes on AN or VP concerning the RfBA underway for FearBot, which would serve to tag new articles that meet certain spam- and nusiance-related guidelines for PROD or speedy; inasmuch as you are a (properly righteous if perhaps not infrequently unnecessarily brusque) staunch defender of WP:BITE and the extension thereof to the quick tagging of (not blatantly unencyclopedic) new articles, you may, I imagine, have some thoughts. There needs to be no proposed version there, if a user wants to change things all he or she has to do is find citations and change things likewise. The proposed version doesn't look like it contains much facts, just povs.--THUGCHILDz 19:55, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Gracenotes RfA

I know it was. I have seen Gracenotes at TfD numerous times and often look for his vote in discussions for a balanced and knowledgable opinion. I found the treatment he received on his RfA to be among the most unfair things I have ever seen here. I hate to be so curt in my response to you (although we disagree frequently, I respect you as an administrator and editor), but this is really how I feel about the situation. Sorry :( . [edit] RFA is a joke anyway -"Fuk"

You require perfection of administrators, but your records are sealed, then you're flippant to people who voice concern? It's nice when your own glass house is hidden behind a brick wall, but while it is, please don't demand perfection from others not so fortunate as to be able to afford the bricks, and please don't be flippant to other editors about your privilege-washed identity. You are the one voting that another editor be perfect or not be made an administrator--others should be granted the courtesy of being able to review your own records for imperfections, the criterion you set for administrators. When this is not an option, maybe you ought not to be so smug about demanding in others what cannot be verified about you. KP Botany 16:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

First of all, I passed RfA under another username. Secondly, I don't require "perfection". And finally, I am open to recall for crying out loud! I am six requests away from being recalled! I have chosen to stay vulnerable - so please don't give me this bullshit. -- Y not? 18:12, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, you passed under another username, apparently, and your RFA is not, therefore, open to scrutiny, so you're setting standards for others that cannot be scrutinized for you. There's no bullshit about asking people to conform to the same standards they arbitrarily set up for other folks, so please don't accuse me of giving you bullshit. And there is no bullshit to looking at the standard bearer's standards--it's pretty common SOP. And, you're the one who raised a specific standard, a criterion.[9] I consider that folks raising standards for others should hold themselves to the same standards first. If it cannot be confirmed that you hold yourself to those same standards, then, imo, you shouldn't raise them for others--and my commenting to you about it is not bullshit. I have seen too much of administrators not holding other administrators to any standards, the whole InShaneee douche bag incident for example. So, when I see someone saying, "one chance," or you're out, I'm curious how they have dealt with badly-behaved administrators in the past, how they commented on past admin RFCs, arb-coms, for example. But this isn't available with you, because you don't have a user history that long, for whatever reason. RfA has become very acrimonious, people keep telling me adminship is no big deal, but no one acts like it isn't a big deal, so I'm try to understand how people vote and why. I got the joke about the recall thing a long time ago, by the way--it's old. KP Botany 18:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Joke??
Look - I did not get recalled before I switched identities - I must not have been that bad. Since February, same deal. If ever you see me f-bomb anyone like Ivo did - come and make a ruckus. And until you do, please go write an article or something. Oh, and check your email. -- Y not? 18:51, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that's right, don't nip things in the bud, don't sort things out early on, wait until they explode. I'm not really interested in why you changed your name, I'm interested in your posting comments that hold one user to a standard that you can't be held to. Don't worry, I do have other things to do, and I've said my piece, knowing full well it would be worthless. And, yes, I said I got the joke. KP Botany 18:59, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

On this: it's vague, unreferenced, and unsatisfactory, but it doesn't look at all like A7 to me. True, I deleted it earlier, but that was as a copyvio, an issue that seems to have been cleared up (although the article's history is confusing and there may be some complication I've overlooked).

He's a classical singer. I don't see albums, labels, solo performances, media writeups, or any other indicia of notability. That he has sung in Holland and Greece is good, but it doesn't meet A7. Actually I'd never heard of "MMO". (I even looked for it, intending to link to it.) While I'm far too lazy to search around for some guideline or policy to throw at you, I was under the impression that unsubstantiated-by-solid-references but prima facie credible claims of even mild notability were enough to rescue an article from speedification. You can prod it, you can send it to AfD (yawn), but (I think) you can't speedy it. If I'm right here, I rather wish I were wrong, as I routinely see articles on photographers who seem less notable as photographers than this man is as a singer, and life's too short to do the AfD rigmarole for more than 5% of them. -- Hoary 11:03, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you very much!

Hi Y!

Thank you very much for the barnstar; that was really lovely of you. :) In truth, although I did do a ton of work on Styracosaurus, I only co-write the articles, as there are several other editors who also write dinosaur articles.

I'm glad to hear that there are little girls obsessed with dinosaurs, and fathers who encourage their daughters to like dinosaurs. Actually, we were writing these articles for a more mature audience (high school or above), but I'm glad someone her age can enjoy them, too. Truth to tell, horned dinosaurs are my favorites, too; I was obsessed with dinosaurs starting at the age of five. If your daughter likes Styracosaurus, she probably likes Triceratops, too. Eventually, I hope to get around to developing Protoceratops further, and if you have any ideas or suggestions for improvements on Wikipedia dinosaur articles, please feel free to make them. Again, thank you for your kind gesture. Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 04:07, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

She sounds really precocious! My girlfriend and I went hiking last week in the Whetstone Mountains near the area where the first fossils of Sonorasaurus were discovered, and we happened to spot some old cattle bones. I bent down and said, completely tongue-in-cheek, "It must be a Velociraptor!" She floored me when she asked, "What's a Velociraptor?" Firsfron of Ronchester 22:39, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I don't know how often you check your commons account, so I hope you don't mind if I post this here. When nominating the above image for deletion, you noted that images created by the City of Largo are copyrighted to the State of Florida. The reasoning at commons:template:PD-FLGov implies that all Florida government works are released into the public domain. So, for clarification, could you please explain (or just reference) why Largo images are copyrighted by the state? Thanks in advance, ˉˉanetode╦╩ 17:25, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for posting here - I would have never seen it there. Just out of an OR sense that towns like Largo are creatures of state law and, unless we know otherwise, do not reserve copyrights in a manner different from that of the state. Feel free to ignore me if you think that's wrong. -- Y not? 18:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] [[Eragon 1]]

You reverted this page set for speedy deletion thereby continuing its existence. The page has nothing linked to it. Is it because there is a possibility someone may create such a link in the future? Currently, it is the first page to show up on a wiki search for Eragon (the book) thereby confusing users of such a search. Meanwhile, as already stated, it has nothing linked to it (except, of course now this talk page!) - Steve3849 talk 19:43, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I reverted it in the sense of declining your CSD nomination in my capacity as administrator. Use WP:RFD please. This is not a speedy deletion candidate. -- Y not? 19:45, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi, read it as you asked. The following is a copy/paste of reason #2 for deletion: 2. The redirect might cause confusion. For example, if "Adam B. Smith" was redirected to "Andrew B. Smith", because Andrew was accidentally called Adam in one source, this could cause confusion with the article on Adam Smith, so it should be deleted.
Nor do I see that stated reasons to avoid deletion on that page apply. The page is not even old. Can you be more specific regarding "not... a candidate"? - Steve3849 talk 20:44, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Dude - those are reasons for slow deletion, not speedy deletion! You nominated it for speedy. It is only for obvious cases. This case is not obvious! Therefore, you need to start an RFD debate which will achieve consensus over a period of days. No go and follow disrections there. -- Y not? 23:52, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for more the detailed explanation. There are clearly many rules that fairly new users such as myself need direction towards. Shouldn't need to bug you anymore. - Steve3849 talk 12:29, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TransPerfect

Hi Y,

I’m writing in reference to your deletion of Translations.com, Epic Global Solutions, ABREVE and Crimson Life Sciences. Although these are all affiliates of TransPerfect I believe they all have significant scope and international influence to be justified as individual entries. I was editing today to improve the NPOV and to introduce external links, citations and wikilinks so that the articles merit would be demonstrated. There are several other company technologies on the site and I also believe these to be relevant also. The speed at which business is growing globally means that these technologies, terminologies and large companies are of significant public interest and therefore relevant for Wikipedia. I ask that you restore the pages and allow me some time to improve the NPOV?

Thank you, Christie

Absolutely not, Christie. You're obviously an employee or a paid promoter or some such other person. You should be ashamed of yourself. If you would like to appeal my deletions under WP:CSD criterion G11, you can feel free to start a discussion at Deletion Review. I am sure you will not succeed. -- Y not? 16:28, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

ENTRY: Śrc. DEFINITION: To set, set up, erect, prescribe. 'Š'hari'a, from Arabic Šarća, law, from Šaraca, to ordain, prescribe.

Sarah (שָׂרָה "Princess", Standard Hebrew Sara, Tiberian Hebrew Śārāh, Arabic Šarća, law: سارة) is the wife of Abraham as described in the Hebrew Bible. Sarah's story is told in the Book of Genesis. Sarah was originally called Ŝarai (שָׂרַי / שָׂרָי "My princess", Standard Hebrew Saray, Tiberian Hebrew Śāray / Śārāy) and lived with her husband, then called Abram (אברם) in the city of Haran. When God told Abram to leave his homela ...

Why delete the following? It should be evident that Ŝarah and Ŝaria share the same semitic root. Is there something in this statement that you dispute? If so why not mention it on the talk page first?

Šarai. In this way the Egyptian handmaiden to Šarai law is Hagar as m [hotep] a phrase meaning in law (the doing of what is right and proper) is peace. The story sets the legal precedents for the ten commandments and establishes the relationships, father, husband, wife, sister, handmaiden in terms of an inheritance from the semitic [Šarai] law and the afroasiatic Egyptian law of [Ma3t]. The descendants of this union are represented by Israel and its reverence for the written law of the ten commandments and Ishmael with the vision of Hagar and the law of the Koran. I saw that.. I took the statement "no prejudice towards recreation" to mean that, as long as the new page asserted notability and wasn't a gameguide it would be okay to recreate. The effort you deleted was an attempt to do that. (heh. edit conflict) shas 14:35, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
No, I deleted it based on CSD A7 - website with no assertion of notability -- Y not? 14:37, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
It's a game :/ I was working on doing that.. I've not had a huge amount of time to do so, what with all the speedy delete things that keep popping up shas 14:44, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Why did you delete the CallWeaver page?

How the CallWeaver page I created considered spam??

It's quite praiseful. It's A7 anyway, even if it's not spammy. -- Y not? 18:13, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Well it may of been praiseful, but it was very close to fact. I dont have anything to do with CallWeaver except use it and know thats its superior in many ways to Asterisk and other PBXs. I think that other users would benefit from learning about it. I even requested, nicely, on the Talk page for it not to be deleted so I could work on it and make it acceptable. Could you please explain/provide a link to A7. I tried looking for it, couldn't find anything. Mm 202 20:11, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
So sorry... WP:CSD #7 under Articles. Patently non-notable software. -- Y not? 20:12, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
I disagree, it may not be as popular as Asterisk; but it is gaining notoriety and has features that make it unique.
Would you please undelete it and give me a chance to add some sources / work on it? Or just flag it for pending deletion and if no one else adds to it / objects then delete it. Mm 202 22:55, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
OK. Prod it is. -- Y not? 00:34, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. So you are going to undelete it or do I need to start over? Mm 202 01:27, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Brainfreeze -- Y not? 01:37, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

So could I remove the AfD from the CallWeaver page now, please? Mm 202 16:22, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

No you cannot. The closing administrator will do it when the discussion is done, if the article kept. -- Y not? 17:24, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
And the closing admin is Calltech? Great. This should end well. Mm 202 17:58, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
The closing admin will come around soon enough - after at least five days. Calltech is not an admin. -- Y not? 19:40, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, ok, good. Thanks again, Y. Mm 202 20:00, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shinerama

I took a careful look at Google, and I am not sure if AfD would delete it--what it has mostly going against it is the fraternity-boy sounding name.. Not as if it were one college's, there's extensive coverage in every university in canada. People usually blame me for saying other people's speedy tags aren't justified--I think you caught me putting on one that perhaps I shouldn't have. But someone else probably will send it- The way to improve it, is three or four references from whatever canadian student papers have WP pages to show they are notable--as refs, not links--& and also one or two specific CFF sites as refs for the money received. It's subtler to do them as refs than links. I'm also sending this to businformant, who wrote it. DGG (talk) 22:34, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I did not use any copyrighted information, only the biographical information that is in my computer for use by my boss, Jay Finkelman. Ha ha ha, I'd never seen that one... though I've watched footage of Greenspan speak before and being how I'm not an economist I can see the comparison (and perhaps I'd see it even if I was). Thanks for the link!
It never ceases to amaze me how many of Carroll's characters seem to come to life in politics. I'll never forget reading about the Kansas School Board's edict on teaching evolution:

"In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is no longer limited to the search for natural explanations of phenomena." - Associated Press

Which of course reminded me of

`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

I chuckled all day.--Isotope23 18:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

No, it doesn't speak to that (though there are some particularly interesting developments in regards to theory on the origin; purpose will always be outside the scope of science). It wasn't the decision of the schoolboard to teach ID along with evolution that I found particularly funny; it was the semantic acrobatics they were going through to justify it. That's why I'll never be in politics  :)--Isotope23 19:19, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thích Quảng Đức

Hi Y. I noticed you removed diacritics from title Thích Quảng Đức. Your reason was "other vietnamese article names do not have diacritics". I wouldn't discuss this was a good reason or not but I have to say that I disagree with you about this. There are many other articles' names with diacritics, like Xuân Diệu, Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, Mỹ Tho, Nguyễn Thuyên. So it goes. In fact, Vietnamese names with diacritics or not is an issue that has been discussed for some times but still no consensus reaches. You can see the discussions here and here. In Thich Quang Duc, a requested move was proposed and almost all of editors opposed moving. Thus I suggest you shouldn't move any more such pages until consensus is made. @pple 08:54, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy Deletion: Web Analytics Association

Speedy deletion was given reason G11 (exists only to promote a company or service). The article had previously been tagged as Advert and work had been done to clean it up. If this was insufficient, returning the Advert tag would definitely have had more work done to improve the article.

Initial deletion call was given reason A7 (non notability). The article discussed an association put together by Walt_Disney_Internet_Group, Webtrends, Omniture, Yahoo!, and a few other companies that now lists dozens of longstanding web analytics companies as members, however the membership and influence on the web analytics industry wasn't described in the article, as far as I remember. Again, tagging and requesting correction would have been better than deletion - and even better than speedy deletion. Mr. Bene 11:41, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

I see responses to messages posted later than this, but none here yet. Any feedback at all would be appreciated. Mr. Bene 23:21, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
No response was called for! -- Y not? 02:25, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Ah. I do see that I didn't put in any question marks. Is it OK to re-create the Web Analytics Association record? Mr. Bene 18:44, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, if you get consensus at WP:DRV. I don't like rudeness. -- Y not? 21:15, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't think anyone likes rudeness. If I have been rude I apologize. I have not attempted to contest deletion before this time, and the text on the Web Analytics Association AfD page ("The result was g11 -- Y not? 04:15, 23 August 2007 (UTC)"), with the "not?" being linked to your talk page give a strong impression that contesting should be done here. [edit] About user Eidah, Izzak and me

While i Strongly condemn the accusation from user Izzak that u r aiding user Eidah in his POV, i must remind u that Izzak did not mean to hurt u or to just make a discussion about your capacity and justice as a system operator, i think the pain towards u is that u know him and u do nothing to tame his POV. i don't think its your job or duty to silence users and that's why i think Izak cannot blame anybody but himself for being lazy to deal with eidahs edits, i am struggling with eida for over a week in the Zionist articles not one word from izzak to hep me, and the gentile sysops have even thought that i am a Vandal because of this, we are all in this together with the same duty to deal with Eidah he has broken no rules of sockpupetry and we must deal with his POV, which he does very open and therefore appreciated so we can fix it. Keep up the good work and i am happy we have here a Jewish sysop with knowledge in this issues to deal with it. thank u very much for your service to us.--יודל 15:43, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

I know him, I know his POV pushing. I know that you're hardly better. I know IZAK too and I know his POV pushing for a long time now. I do nothing either to advance the POV to defeat the POV nor do I go into any other battles that you people fight. When was the last time I meaningfully edited a Hasidic or Zionist article? Leave me out of this. -- Y not? 17:33, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
But we would like u to get involved and not just stay aside and do nothing like this we can finely solve thinks. thanks--יודל 18:13, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
There's nothing to solve. I am not blocking him. Who is blocking him? Ultimately, he'll just have to be taken to Arbcom. -- Y not? 19:00, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Please help me understand your reasoning, first u say their is nothing to be solved then u declare that this must be solved by Arbcom, if u believe that their is a problem why wait for Arbcom why not enforce rules and polices along the way?--יודל 12:26, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
I believe the attempted community ban is not sticking - since people are not really willing to block him for coming back after being soft-banned. Therefore, the only way his opponents would be able to get him hard-banned is by going through arbitration. Oherwise, he will stay un-banned. -- Y not? 14:22, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Hi there, what's with this "soft-banned" and "hard-banned" terminology? it's beginning to sound like porn, maybe I am not up-to-date with the latest buzz-words regarding permanantly blocked users who use multiple sockpuppets. When confronted with a supspected, AFAIK all that is required is to basically prove that what we have here is a sockpuppet of a banned user, see Wikipedia:Banning policy, and the suckpuppet is then banned. Since when does it require the "ArbCom" to deal with a simple basic clear cut case of the violation of WP:SOCK? Unless of course, you are ever-so-gently hinting that a "federal case" should be made when it's only an ant-heap (good mixed metaphor) to give the accused "wiggle-room" to escape and carry on with his mischief since ArbCom cases take a long time. Let's not over-complicate what should be an open and shut case. IZAK 16:45, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

What I meant was, I remember the discussion that took place on ANI after he said something about Jews for Jesus being chayav misa. There were a few opinions expressed and eventually someone blocked him based on that. That wasn't a particularly strong expression of banning, and when he reappeared, nobody touched him until he started pissing people off again. So, he's being blocked for reappearing after being repeatedly indefblocked. But it's not like he's actually abusing sockpuppets to influence consensus or whatever - he's using one account at a time. Doesn't there come a time when he's had enough of a punishment for that remark? Nothing else he's doing merits an indefinite block - in fact many users seem to have some appreciation for what he does. I mean, I know him - he'll reappear... and then? Sockpuppety case #9? What's the point - just work with the guy! -- Y not? 03:40, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Y: I have absolutely no objections working with him or anyone else in the normal course of editing (with the emphasis on the word NORMAL), but when he deploys the worst sort of curses (telling me and others that we will go to "gehinom" and other such like crazy outbursts) how is it possible to live with such abuse? On Wikipedia we all have to face times when the tide goes against us, be it in editing articles, on talk pages, and in various official votes because as the saying goes "you can't win 'em all", and 99% of editors live with this and get over it. Not so Daniel575/Eidah and his sockpuppet incarnations as he flies off the handle (as in the case you cite, that he threatened to throttle people and worse) and he does this kind of stuff all the time, as if he and he alone knows who is going to hell and who is not. You yourself have blocked him in past times for his uncivil manners, so how can you be so tolerant of his maniacal behavior when it is so disruptive and so often violates WP:POINT (see also WP:REICHSTAG which fits Daniel575/Eidah so well.) Thanks for your thoughtful response. IZAK 01:08, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
How can I be tolerant? I know where he's coming from. I talk to him offline and I sometimes like him - when he doesn't go into rant mode. I am unwilling to write the guy off. While I'm not going to go unblock him, but I won't be indefblocking his next incarnation either. -- Y not? 04:09, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
While we all agree that Izak and Eidah or all of us, wont relent in our drive to influence wiki with our POV, and we will all keep on coming back with other names, i do appreciate your talking to him and dealing with those people in the right way, thanks for that, but lets not forget our main purpose here is not fighting and dealing with people we must look at the edits and never on those behind them, if u can take care of that to clean up the details of what and why the latest outburst of Eidah got him blocked for again, we would greatly appreciate your job as a sysop. Please read the talk page of Haredim and Zionism regarding the grave concern that the current version is slanderous POV to say that all other Hasidim who r not satmar do support Zionism, (Its a long standing satmar belief that since u take money and u vote u r supporting Zionism.) I personally think it should be opened, 3 days is more then enough to cool down the edit war that was never really there for more then 5 minutes, or at least, that's why i am turning to a you as a involved Jewish sysop, reverted to the best unbiased version in your eyes. Thank you for your assistance. As to the "hook." I believe that my statement about "helping save traditional ballads from oblivion" is factual, since that was her accomplishment in recording and transcribing them. Perhaps you'd be more comfortable with:

...that American folklorist Helen Hartness Flanders recorded, transcribed and catalogued traditional ballads from New England at a time when people were ceasing to sing them.

My co-author and I have access to more appropriate images, which have been in the family and published elsewhere. However, uploading such images doesn't seem to conform to copyright categories endorsed by Wikipedia. Any advice? My search of images failed to locate a Wikipedia image of Helen Flanders, yet you were able to provide one. Are there others available?

HopsonRoad 00:54, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mark Warner (Canadian politician)

I don't understand why you have deleted this entry as spam. The article is well-sourced to items from newspapers and other on-line searchable sources. The article meets the same standard as that for the American "Mark Warner" and for Bob Rae, El Farouk Khaki, and Chuck Daly. If there are additional items that require sources, please indicate so. Where requested, additional sources have been added already in response to comments from one user Reginald Perrin, who appears to be the only user to call into question this entry's compliance with Wiki standards. In light of the circumstances, deletion as spam seems particularly unjustified. The entry concerns a Canadian politician in an upcoming by-election. Entries about his competitors are on the site. It would seem odd to delete an entry for Mr. Warner, not his competitors while there is no evident difference in the sourcing used in the Warner entry vis a vis the entries for his competitors. Please restore the entry forthwith. --Canam1 10:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I would also add that there are also no citations to the Personal section for Bill Graham, the outgoing politician who Mr. Warner is seeking to replace. By contrast, at the time the article was deleted, there were over twenty references to the Mark Warner article. The Bob Rae references to his personal life are arguably to his own autobiography. How is that more legitimate than the third-party reference used in the Mark Warner article. Please note also that in the discussion of the Bob Rae article, a link is provided to changes made by his wife, no less.... And similarly, on his Facebook site, El Farouk Khaki publicly thanks one of his volunteers for creating and editing his site. Why, in light of this, is the Mark Warner article being singled out for deletion? --Canam1 17:14, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

With the greatest of respect, as regards the alleged violation of WP:AUTO & WP:SPAM, where is the substantiation for that? And furthermore, even if it were true, how could that be correct in light of the comments above?

With respect to WP:N, how can the candidate for the governing party be the sole candidate not to be notable enough to be referred to among all the opposition candidates listed along with him in the Toronto Centre article? This does not seem to be particularly neutral, especially in light of the fact that the deleted article referenced impartial third-party materials - including newspaper articles - referring to the facts contained in the article.

In light of the above, will you please undelete the article or return the underlying code so that a new article that complies more with the standard (as opposed to the standard in the Bob Rae, El Farouk Khaki and Bill Graham articles not to mention the American Mark Warner and the Steve Gilchrist articles) can be created. --Canam1 19:49, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, since you couldn't wait for a response and pulled the trigger on the DRV, I'll let that process run its course. With the greatest of respect, -- Y not? 04:10, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Ok, but I did not pull the trigger on DRV, User:Reginald Perrin who initiated this chain of events did. I simply followed the rules, and respectfully asked each of you in the decision chain between 3:39 and 4:53 yesterday to reconsider their hasty decisions based on the reasons given here. --Canam1 08:02, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
I just noticed that User:Reginald Perrin has added a reference to Mark Warner to the Bob Rae article. How can he assert that Warner is not notable, begin a process that leads to the deletion of an article on Warner, then add a reference to Warner in Rae's article? [01:31, 4 September 2007 (hist) (diff) Bob Rae‎ (opponents/removing alphabet soup, postnomial letters are already listed in infobox.)] Can this really be done in good faith? I think the Wiki rules are being abused here, and would respectfully ask you to correct it ASAP. --Canam1 10:20, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
The premises for your claim are false. 1) I didn't assert that Warner was not notable, I told you following the deletion that Warner's notability outside of his candidacy was questionable unless one argues all lawyers are notable and I speculated that this may have been one reason why another editor initiated the speedy deletion process and why yet another editor completed it. In any case, listing Warner as one of several candidates in an upcoming by-election, which is the edit here that he refers to is neither an assertion of notability or non-notability but simply the recognition of the fact that Warner is one of several candidates in the contest and fills in a space in an infobox. 2) I didn't initiate the deletion process or suggest that the article be deleted, GreenJoe initiated it and in fact, I did the exact opposite by listing the article for DRV. Reginald Perrin 17:04, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Mark Warner (Canadian politician). Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article or speedy-deleted it, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Reginald Perrin 00:17, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Editing protected pages

You made a controversial edit to Fred Thompson, which I believe was an abuse of your admin privilege. Navou had protected the page, and obviously had protected the wrong version, as we should all be well aware happens when we protect pages during content disputes. We, as admins, should not go in, while the matter is still under dispute, and change to our personally preferred version. We are welcome to act as any other user and contribute to the discussion on the talk page. Just thought I'd drop you a note with my disapproval because you seem to be open to accountability. Thanks for your consideration.-Andrew c [talk] 14:44, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree in principle. I would not have done so had I not been motivated by concerns in the spirit of BLP, as stated in my edit summary. -- Y not? 16:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, Y, but what possible BLP concerns do you have with including a reliably sourced reference (2 citations in fact) to the man's birth name, confirmed in one by his own son? Is "Freddie" defamatory in some way? Tvoz |talk 19:51, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it feels like an attempt to hurt him professionally, if you know what I mean. Look, I didn't say this infringed on WP:BLP - I just felt that in the context of a high-profile biography of a living person we don't want to do harm. The edit was not really appropriate. If somebody wants, I will revert myself. -- Y not? 19:54, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm not uninvolved, so I can't ask you to do that, although honestly I think you should. You're an admin - you have colleagues - ask them what they think, and do what you think is best. I disagree with you on this, but I have faith in your judgment and I won't be taking this anywhere else. It's temporary anyway. On the substance - I think the point is that MOSBIO is pretty clear about the first sentence of articles, and even more than that, it's like that everywhere on Wikipedia - so to make a different rule for Thompson, or Edwards, just because some might think their birth names are being used to denigrate them, strikes me as wrong and inconsistent. (And if they can't take this kind of heat, I worry...) Tvoz |talk 21:11, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

I've been slowly working on a page at User:Eddroid/Brightcove like you asked. It's incomplete, but is there some chance you can put the page in place so it can attract more feedback? Eddroid 20:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
What you have there is no good. Does Brightcove meet WP:CORP or WP:WEB? Are there multiple non-trivial reliable sources that have written about Brightcove? If there are, write an article from them, and I'll post it. Look at my latest article - Samuel Rivera - everything from secondary sources, nothing is original research. Once you do that with Brightcove, let me know. -- Y not? 20:16, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm building up the history section from their blog. The BC blog contains links to related external sources (although many of the links to the big media outlets are outdated). I will extract those outside sources and add them to the article. I'll get back to you. -- Eddroid 21:26, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
I've added a number of non-trivial third-party references to the sample Brightcove article (Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNET News). None of it is or ever was original research. The history is complete to the end of 2006. The rest is a stub. I don't see how it doesn't meet notability requirements when similar video sharing sites like Revver and Veoh have their own pages. For example, Alexa ratings for Brightcove.com are comparable to Revver.com. The only thing I could see being wrong is the number of references to the site's own blog, but those could easily be removed, even though it would dramatically cut down the content of the article. --Eddroid 19:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Joba Chamberlain - play by play

I understand being hesitant about listing play by plays on a player's page but it was in response to one of the entries regarding the "Joba Rules".

In the Joba Rules section, there was a snippet about Joba never being allowed to be brought in in the middle of an inning. Last night's "play by play" entry was a direct contradiction of the above mentioned Joba Rules and deserves to be noted. It's the first mid-inning relief appearance for Joba which for any other relief pitcher would be a trivial fact, but the fact that it goes against established rules makes it relevant. It's not so much a play by play, but rather a first for the pitcher. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jngnyc (talkcontribs) 13:26, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Y. Regarding your block of Swdetd, I'd like to unblock him. He does have a conflict of interest because he works for the firm. I think the proper course of action is to supply the boilerplate conflict of interest notice and ask him to refrain from editing the article about his firm. I know you speedied it, but if you'll note in the forth deleted edit, another admin had declined to do so. I would have, as well, based on what was on the talk page. The other spam concern is linking to the law firm article from cases that firm lawyers have participated in. I agree that's valid (though he also linked to the opposing counsel's organization [12]), but again think the proper course is to direct the editor to our guidelines on links and ask he abide by them or come to an agreement with neutral outsiders about whether links to firms belong. If spam/coi edits continue, I will reblock myself. How's that sound?--Chaser - T 02:36, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

I stand by my earlier decision, but I won't object if you unblock etc. -- Y not? 00:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Me

Yes, I started slowly with uncontroversial stuff like orphaned talk pages, but then I realised there is just so much cr*p being added that I may as well start tackling it. Almost none of it has reapppeared (though a couple have had to go to AfD due to the persistence of their creators (i.e. Studley Darts League) and one was salted as a result) so I take that as a good sign. My talk page is certainly more active than it has been before :) пﮟოьεԻ 57 08:11, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Expansion of James Hartness article

Dear Y, I am expanding James Hartness, but I'm having difficulty with two multiple references:

  • Wicks, Frank (November 1999). Renaissance tool man. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
  • "Springfield in Mourning as Last Rites are Held for James Hartness Inventor, Scientist and Ex-Governor", Springfield (Vermont) Reporter, February 9.

For some reason, it doesn't want to conform to the a,b,c, etc. format that the other references achieve. Also, I was unable to make the "accessed" setting properly display 2007-10-8. Perhaps you can assist me. Sincerely, HopsonRoad 15:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

At Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration#Comment_by_uninvolved_Y you say "The indefinite block was imposed by a participant in the controversy..." What controversy? Do you have any evidence that FM was involved in any controversy with FerryLodge prior to arriving at WP:CSN? If so, I'd like to see it, as I'm sure the Arbcom would as well. [edit] Question about a page you deleted

Hi. Please see this deletion log. You deleted this page. It was my understanding, and I've verified this via Administrators' how-to guide, that "For speedy deletions, it may be acceptable to leave the full text as the reason (unless the contents contain personal attacks or other content that would be inappropriate to show in the deletion log". Now, you clearly did not follow that for some odd reason. I want to ask you to please, as an administrator, take better care when deleting pages that contain personal attacks. - Rjd0060 23:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Ooops!! I thought the title was gobbledygook - I had no idea this was about a particular user. My sincere apologies. I can bug a developer to eradicate that, if you want it. Arbeit Sockenpuppe 16:53, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
No. Thats okay. It really isnt that bad of a personal attack. Just wanted to point it out to you. I gave that user a warning for vandalism, and thats what he did. - Rjd0060 17:22, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] work sock?

I notice that you have a "policy-compliant work sock". As a relatively new editor (6 months and 1500 edits is still "new"), I wander around nooks and crannies trying to learn WP policy. I read WP:SOCK#LEGIT and I am still curious. What is your reason for having a sock? What do you do to segregate your use of one account from the other? Sbowers3 17:19, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Ask me privately via email. -- Y not? 18:19, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NYC meetup change of schedule

It's been agreed that we should have a 2-hour formal meeting period to start organizing meta:Wikimedia New York City, and this will be held at the Pacific Library (note this is different from the Brooklyn Central Library, which was discussed earlier) from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

This shouldn't affect you directly since you can't come till later anyway, but if you have any topics or proposals, I'll be glad to present them at the formal meeting on your behalf. And of course there will still be more informal discussions later in the evening at the museum. Next time I promise we'll find a time and place for a formal meeting that is accessible to everyone.--Pharos 21:25, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Don't promise any such thing. Classical Sabbath observance is a relatively esoteric thing, even among Jews, unfortunately. So there's no reason to change the plans of many for the sake of two or three. -- Y not? 23:43, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
