Xuanwu District (simplified Chinese: 宣武区; traditional Chinese: 宣武區; pinyin: Xuānwǔ Qū) is a district of the municipality of Beijing. It lies to the southwest of the old city.
The district is 16.5 km² in size and is home to 526,132 residents (2000 Census), making it the third-largest district in the old city part of Beijing. The district is located outside the "Imperial Inner City" and was predominantly reserved for the lower class. Although rich in history and one of the older districts of the once Imperial City, Xuanwu District is now undergoing rapid changes.
In the planning for the 2008 Olympic Games, many of the district's ancient Hutong are being slated for destruction. Its postal code is 100054.
There is also a district named XuanWu in Nanjing Jiangsu province, with the famous Xuanwu lake.
