Xtreme 4x4 is a half hour series that airs on Spike TV that began in January 2005 as part of Spike's weekend Powerblock line up. The show uses a how-to format, where the hosts build or modify trucks to turn them into hardcore off-road rigs. They also periodically show "extreme action events" from across the United States. These include such events as rock crawling, desert racing, sand drags, mud racing, and trail riding adventures.
The show's hosts, Ian Johnson and Jessi Combs, were selected as part of a publicized, nationwide search for hosts where viewers were encouraged to send in their videos and resumes to Spike TV executives. Both hosts have appeared on other automotive shows including Discovery Channel's Monster Garage and TLC's Overhaulin'.
On January 29, 2007, a non-shoot day, Jessi had an accident at work just outside of the studio. A 550 lb band-saw fell and landed on her back shattering her L3 vertebra and everything surrounding it.
Jessi was treated at Vanderbilt Hospital where doctors performed a major spinal surgery to install new hardware consisting of 2 screws, 4 hooks and 2 rods, allowing for a fusion of the L1 - L4 vertebrae. She was off the program for several months for recovery and returned to the show late last season.
According to the blog on her website, Jessi will be permanently leaving Xtreme at the end of this season's filming.
Unlike former shows aired as part of the Powerblock, the "how-to" component of the show is emphasized to a much greater extent. The show provides more in-depth information into such things as wheel alignment and creating suspensions for off-road vehicles.
