[edit] History
The airline was established in 1987 as Casino Express Airways, and started operations in 1989. The airline changed its name to Xtra Airways on December 8, 2005,[2] as a reflection of the purchase of 19% interest in the company by the British tourism company XL Leisure Group. As a result, XL Airways of Britain loans Xtra Airways aircraft during the winter season.[citation needed]
As of May 2007, Xtra Airways assumed the contract for Myrtle Beach Direct Air,[citation needed] operating scheduled service to and from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina using the 737-400. Destinations include Newark, New Jersey, Niagara Falls, New York and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
