[edit] Mid-Twentieth Century: 1950-1980

The 1950's marked a dramatic turn in the architecture of Cornell University. Following World War II, the student population began to climb dramatically. Pre-war enrollment levels of around 7,000 students exploded to nearly 15,000 in 1970 and reaching above 17,000 by the end of the decade. [1]. The old trend in architecture, to build majestic stone buildings with great detail and embelishment, became unfeasable to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding student and faculty populations. One University administrative report later described this period as one of "unplanned, ubiquitous growth." Thus, the University began to shift to the less expensive and more rapidly constructed modernist architecture.

[edit] "Class of" Houses

right|200px|The repeated designs of the Class of's can clearly be seen from the air Originally known as the University Halls or "U-Halls, the "Class of..." Houses or Class of's were the originally all-male dormitories built on West Campus in the 1950's. The five halls are named for the Cornell graduating classes of '17, '18, '22, '26, and '28. In 1885, in Andrew Dickson White's final presidential report he warned the university of the day when "all be hard and dry, [the University]'s buildings mere boxes." Such a description is apt to describe the Class of's. All were built in a similar box-like fashion, lacking individualizing characteristics and architectural complexity. Although not as clear with the addition of the Noyes Community Center, the Class of's form a quadrangle. Between 2003 and 2008, the Houses are being demolished in favor of large residential colleges as part of president Hunter Rawlings's "West Campus Housing Initiative."
