Previously to September 11, it was inconceivable to most people that anything like it could be planned and executed from within the United States government against its own population. This disbelief was the major component in the planners succes.
Conspiracy theorists like David Icke explain this by a decades long weakening of democratic control and a centuries long domination by a deceitful elite ruling class. The public is being shown a fictional movie of events, which obscures what is really going on.
It is assumed that the planning of the September 11 attacks may have begun even before George W. Bush arranged to steal the Florida election. By staging fake rumours about Al Qaeda planning an attack, it was possible to flush out patriots beforehand which might not comply with orders from above.
[edit] The attacks on the WTC
For the execution of the attacks, there are two basic scenario's: future hijackers had been brainwashed that it would be a good idea to do such a thing, or, the alleged hijackers never knew anything: the planes might have been flown by remote control while everybody on board was killed by poison gas. Conversations via radio or phone might have been faked.
The main smoking gun was the failure for NORAD to intercept. It is standard procedure to provide escort service to any plane which looses radio contact in order to avoid collisions. Interceptions are usually realised in 12 minutes, with a reported 18 minute maximum.
Multiple Military Exercises were conducted that day, including hijacked planes that were flown into buildings. It was suspected that these exercises would have hindered response as to the confusion they might cause. Condoleezza Rice denied that the government could have ever conceived flying planes into buildings as a weapon, when it was in fact being rehearsed the same day.
A second smoking gun is a reluctance to investigate how such a tragedy could have happened: initial budget for the 911 commission was 5 million dollars, only established many months after the tragedy. In the meantime, a billion dollars a day is spent on hunting down alleged terrorists. The chair of the commission was not independent of the Bush government.
Three buildings collapsed due to fire on that day. Especially building 7 is hard to explain, since steel buildings usually survive fires. The debry of the buildings was swiftly removed, hindering investigation, despite protests of concerned architects and scientists. Six years after the fact the final report on the WTC7 collapse still has not been released; in the first 911 report it was only mentioned in a footnote.
[edit] The attack on the Pentagon
Though the surface to air missile defence of the Pentagon seems not to have functioned that day, and response seemed inadequate in that respect, FBI was capable of confiscating all the security camera tapes surrounding the building. The tapes were only released after years of nagging and law suits, and then only a few frames of a few tapes. This is suspect behaviour, and might be either to obscure the fact that there was no plane, or to create confusion when in fact there was a plane.
