[edit] Please don't fight

And if you must fight, please don't fight with me. Any sort of automatic notice posted here will be deleted without consideration of any kind. Do what you think is best; it's a wiki. Don't ask me to come argue about it. — Xiongtalk* 02:41, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstars

Hi Xiong. Meatball tells me you once had the Real Live barnstar. If you don't mind me asking, what happened to it? The idea of having a wiki-award that could be passed around in person -- perhaps between the three major wiki conferences (WikiSym, Wikimania, Recent Changes Camp) was brought up again recently at RCC 2008. Something like the barnstar would be ideal for this. But then, I know the original barnstar discussion was from years ago. Let me know... cheers, phoebe / (talk) 23:12, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

You're correct; I have the Real Live Original Barnstar, the actual metal item. I had considerable difficulty tracking it down. I have it in a box; the box is in storage, under lock and key.
The Real Barnstar is about a foot wide; the tiny little images floating around WP suck. I have taken high resolution photos and made them available at www.cafepress.com/xuefang. I haven't made any effort to market them but there they are. You can get your barnstar on teeshirts, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, and stuffed bears -- all the usual ephemera. See BarnstarTeeshirt.
Suggest you read BarnStarInABox in some detail if you want to understand what I think about all this. If you want to put a smile on my face and reward your favorite contributor or mop-wielder, buy a teeshirt. — Xiongtalk* 11:43, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

OK, good to know... and nice to track down at least one arm of the barnstar's provenance. I have some smaller ones with the 'wiki' design (maybe 3 inches across), and I know a Wikipedian who found some larger ones; but have never seen one as large as a foot across. The reason we were talking about an award that would move around between conferences or conference teams is precisely because it wouldn't go to an individual; but rather to a team, who would then have to pass it along the next year.

Anyway, re: tshirt sales, part of the trouble may be that your shirts don't come up in the first few pages on a search in cafepress for 'wikipedia' or 'wiki.' I wonder if there's a way to tag them better so they come up closer to the top? Certainly as the community has grown I think you'll likely find more people with interest in barnstars and related ephemera than the first time you tried to sell them. cheers, -- phoebe / (talk) 17:41, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I have a couple other barnstars, too. I have a small one hanging on my wall. But they don't match the original exactly. Sunir Shah grabbed a small photo of that, faked up more rust that it had to begin with, and made it even smaller. That's what got picked up by WP -- a fake of a poor copy. The barnstar I have in storage is the original design exactly.
I'm not into marketing; I'm a technical person. The whole notion of one barnstar circulating annually does not please me -- especially if my name's not on the plaque. Add to that my annoyance that the community shows no interest in a decent photo of the item, preferring to hack up the tiny image grabbed from SS.
Okay, here's my idea. I'll dig the Real Original Wiki Barnstar out of storage and give it to the first person to buy -- or sell -- 100 barnstar teeshirts. That will be far easier than earning the Real Barnstar by banishing the idolaters from the temple. — Xiongtalk* 20:39, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I would love a better photo of the barnstar! But, um, I don't have the original to take it from :) -- phoebe / (talk) 07:49, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Please don't re-indent. You began the thread, your position is flush left. I replied, my position is +1. If somebody else weighs in, he can be +2. Okay?
Buy some teeshirts -- or keepsake boxes, clocks, or what have you. If you want a CafePress item and I haven't put it on, let me know. I'll be glad to add it. — Xiongtalk* 18:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] could you please do me a favor?

Hello,

I am a master student at the Institute of Technology Management, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Currently I am wrapping up my master thesis titled “Can Wikipedia be used for knowledge service?” In order to validate the knowledge evolution maps of identified users in Wikipedia, I need your help. I have generated a knowledge evolution map to denote your knowledge activities in Wikipedia according to your inputs including the creation and modification of contents in Wikipedia, and I need you to validate whether the generated knowledge evolution map matches the knowledge that you perceive you own it. Could you please do me a favor?

  1. I will send you a URL link to a webpage on which your knowledge evolution map displays. Please assign the topic (concept) in the map to a certain cluster on the map according to the relationship between the topic and clusters in your cognition, or you can assign it to ‘none of above’ if there is no suitable cluster.
  2. I will also send a questionnaire to you. The questions are related to my research topic, and I need your viewpoints about these questions.

The deadline of my thesis defense is set by the end of June, 2008. There is no much time left for me to wrap up the thesis. If you can help me, please reply this message. I will send you the URL link of the first part once I receive your response. The completion of my thesis heavily relies much on your generous help.

Sincerely

Well, feel free to link me to whatever you have. I'll look at it but I'm not sure what you're trying to do. My contribs are public. — Xiongtalk* 23:26, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
